    Dr Hedtke's Frekleton Disaster of 1944 book thoroughly explains the cause and consequences

    The Frekleton Disaster was a...disaster, and the story is very well told with rich detail of the efforts by the yanks, RAF members and the town folk to try to save the children. A "horrible accident" was the investigative conclusion, as a result of the sudden storm and the B-24 aircraft being hit by lightning. The book helped us at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum (Pooler, GA, USA) explain the tragedy during our Memorial Day (31 May 2021) Service at the Frekleton Memorial in the Museum's Memory Garden, among the 26,000 sea of flags displayed for the fallen of WWII.

    Re living that day

    This book means a lot to me my father was stationed at Wharton airfield at that time. Every time I go over to visit I always visit the cemetery it is well taken care of. My aunt worked the switchboard in Preston they had to keep all the lines open. When I was little I represented America in their May procession.
