Good For Watch, and a think...
This is film born of the matrix generation. Starring Sean Bean (In a minor role) Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs. It is set in a future where a fascist government controls the population through a drug called Prozium. This drug takes away most human emotion, leaving the population without the highs and lows of the human experience. Bale is part of the security forces highest trained officers known as the clerics. His job is to root out those people not taking their medication, and to remove and destroy all illegal possessions that might cause people to feel again. Books, paintings, television shows, and activities thought to be destructive to the proper way of life are confiscated and destroyed, the owners of said perifinalia are put to death. Through the course of the film Bale moves from the "good" side to the darker side "feeling" his way to the truth of his culture and through a few highly stylized action sequences helps the Resistance. The action in this film is fun to watch but very plotted and planned out. the final scenes in the film are so much like the matrix I don't think they would have existed before that era of filming. The plot is strong, even without the action scenes it would hold together. However some of the acting is a little weak. Bale does a good job as does Watson. But in certain scenes it is as thought the other actors realize their scripting isn't the best and do a lackluster job delivering their lines. I remember being amazed by this movie the first time I watched it, but as the years go by and other better films are released, returning to this one brings pleasure but the film definitely feels dated now.

No, "The Matrix" was better
This was an interesting film. Some of it was "Matrix" like, which I thought was a bit 'cliche, but what intrigued me the most was the premise. Peace maintained by drugs rendering people completely servile and devoid of feeling? Insane! Art, music, books, any remnants of the past...NOT ALLOWED! Penalty: SUMMARY COMBUSTION! I won't spoil it for you, but it has to be watched at least once. It's interesting and weird, yet entertaining, but one has to focus on the STORY and SITUATION to get any value out of this. I watched this with a friend and all he could focus on was "pictures". Totally didn't get the story.This was an interesting film. A dark glimpse into our possible near future.
When I first saw this movie over five years ago, I thought it was a poor man's Matrix. After watching the entire movie though, I found it to be quite different and quite interesting. The action is good, but the story is better. It's a story about a man who dared to be different in a world that made mankind take medicine to all be the same. Of course I'm just giving a brief synopsis, but this movie is a must see. If you do like the Matrix, you'll like this as well. Great movie!! One of Christian Bale's best performances in my opinion. Also a great supporting cast as well.
