I owned two copies of 4-Way Street on vinyl and another copy on CD, and have been listening to this set for the past 30 years. It remains one of my all-time favorite records by anybody. I am a fan of 60's flower power hippie music and 70's folk rock. This particular set of music bridges the gap between those two genres perfectly. Neil Young's performance stands out. His version of On the Way Home is far superior to that of Buffalo Springfield's; and Don't Let it Bring You Down is as good as the studio version on After the Gold Rush. The bonus acoustical medley The Loner/Cinnamon Girl/Down by the River is slow, intense, and almost 10 minutes of Neil perfection. I think Graham Nash's performance here exceeds what he has contributed to the CSN&Y studio albums. Pre-Road Downs is just a ... It rocks clean and pure, as does Chicago. Another bonus track worth noting is an acoustic King Midas in Reverse, a very well-chosen and well-performed Hollies classic. His Teach Your Children alone suggests that he was a much bigger part of the combo here than I had given him credit for at first. I enjoy his interplay and conversation with David Crosby. It appears that they are having a great time onstage, which is apparent in Nash's songs. David Crosby, however, is the lackluster link in this set. His songs are forgettable, and he performs them without passion or much melody. Triad, The Lee Shore, and Laughing are not bad, but they are not good. Long Time Gone is the exception. It is in the electric set, and it is the highlight for David Crosby. Stills is the ringleader. His versatility and leadership are noticable from Suite: Judy Blue Eyes through Find the Cost of Freedom. His talents are impressive, but his material is not as strong as it could have been. Maybe a full-length Judy Blue Eyes, or a yet-to-be-recorded Change Partners would have been perfect. His repeated yips throughout the uptempo songs irritate me. The electric songs are all strong. Carry On and Southern Man last 13 and 14 minutes, and neither one misses a note. Pre-Road and Long Time Gone are superior to their studio incarnations. The Neil Young songs here are just plain strong. So what if a harmony is out of tune here or there. Someone once said that you couldn't turn the volume up on this record and stand it because of the harmonies. I don't find them offensive at all. They are classic CSN&Y. We all love Dylan, right? There's a big difference between a great voice and a great rock and roll voice. I feel the same way about CSN&Y's harmonies. 30 plus years and going strong on this CD. The additional tracks on the reissue are a blessing. They never hit this stride on record again. I still have the vinyl records. I lost the CD in one of the moves. I can't live without this one.

While a few of the folk ballads come across a mite dated after 35 years the majority of this 2 disc set has remained enthralling over interim generations ! While highly topical songs at the time of their writing, in today's world they still hold much of their relevance. Surely an indication that while the times may have changed, they still remain much the same. As a teen, "Teach Your Children' meant I wouldn't spread the BS to my kids that was perpetrated upon my generation. As a parent and grandparent, it personally means teach the young ones about what's good around them and what is truly not "right". "You Can Change the World". If you enjoy great harmony with lyrics which are topical and provocative, I would heartily endorse a purchase of this music.
