This is a game that does not get a lot of attention for some reason. It's Captain Quazar for the 3DO. On a doomed system with lots of poor fmv games this is a definite diamond in the rough. As soon as you put the disk in your 3DO you will be amazed at the quality in this title. Don't be to quick to push start or you will miss the awesome opening music video intro with robots singing the Captain Quazar tune, you have to watch it at least once. The captain is the typical old school saturday morning cartoon super hero (huge chest and arms with a little lower body), at least in appearance. He is actually quite the buffoon and not to bright which only makes him more lovable. He knows how to shoot the guns and that's really his forte. Ok, on to the gameplay. In a nutshell, this game is pure frantic, blow up everything mayhem. The levels are presented in a 3/4 top down view and the map is uncovered as you explore the level. The levels are pretty big. You get a gun, missiles, and grenades (all with limited amounts of ammo) to start with and by blowing up buildings can find upgrades or you can blow up buildings and find money to buy upgrades. On each level there will be objectives to complete to finish that level. To finish the objectives you will need to blow up more buildings to find prisoners who will give up advice on how to complete the missions. By the way, most of the missions will be to blow up certain buildings. As you can see blowing stuff up is a major part of this game. The enemies are numerous in this title. At times you can feel overwhelmed by their numbers and your limited ammo. Make sure to take out the garrison buildings in each area you are in or the troops will just keep coming out. Luckily the AI of the troops is not that great. If you duck behind a building they mostly won't try to shoot you or if you run out of their area they won't follow far. This may sound like a drawback but believe me, it is more of a balance due to the enemies numbers. If I could sum up the gameplay in one sentence I would say to think Metal Slug in a 3/4 top down view. Basically let the bullets fly. GRAPHICS-The graphics are very cartoony and fit this game perfectly. The animations are very well done and while the characters are small on the map they are detailed as are the surroundings. There can be a little slowdown if you start blowing a lot of stuff up at once but 99% of the time the game runs smooth. Sound- The music fits right in with the gameplay and adds to frantic feeling of the game. The sound effects are great. Everything just seems to add to the overall feel of the game. Control- Aiming can be a little difficult at times. The 3DO pad makes it a little difficult to run or aim at angles. This game could use a joystick. But really once you get used to the game these are minor annoyances on occasion. Fun Factor- This is just through the roof. This is easily one of the most just plain fun games I have played. It can be even better with a friend in cooperative action. Overall- If you enjoy blowing things up and a game with a fast action frantic pace then you will absolutely love this game. The prices for it will be a little steep due to it's rarity but I would fully recommend this one to any 3DO owner.Read full review
