An all-star British cast brings this story of love and accidental royalty to life. In 1920, when a well-bred, spirited young woman named Elizabeth Bowes Lyon accepted a dance from the Duke of York, she had no idea her decision would have such consequences. Second in line for the throne, Bertie was a reserved young man--unlike his brother, Edward, who would soon inherit the crown. Bertie and Elizabeth fell in love, married, and had two daughters. But when Edward VIII gave up his throne in order to marry the woman he loved--an American divorcée--the royal responsibilities fell on Bertie. With some hesitation, Bertie changed his name to George and became King George VI. Together, he and Queen Elizabeth helped to restore a nation devastated by the destruction of World War II. Though they never expected to become king and queen, the couple lit up the world with their dignity and spirit. When George died from lung cancer in 1952, their daughter, Princess Elizabeth, took the throne. Even today, the "Queen Mum," who passed away in 2002 at the age of 101, is one of England's most beloved royal figures.

England Needed A Royal Family To Lead The Nation. History Gave Them Bertie And Elisabeth.
The story and the acting was terrific. The story was timely given the current problems within the Royal Family. It's a worthy addition to the PBS series of "Masterpiece Theatre." The only problem was a technical one. The disk would freeze during the program. It would resume playing when I took the disk out and then placed it back in. However this has been a problem I've had on other disks of "Bertie and Elizabeth". This one worked better than the others. I can only hope the freezing has been cleared up in for later editions. PLOT: Albert aka "Bertie" THE SECOND SON BECOMES the KING when his Brother give it all up to marry Wallis Simpson. MASTERPIECE Theatre Gem~ James Wilby is excellent and has the shy manners and stammer down just perfect as "Bertie" (Albert) the younger Brother who becomes King of England when his Brother Edward gives it up to marries twice divorced Wallis Simpson~ Juliet Aubrey is good as the wife who married him for love. This is a bit of fun when we see the shy royal send an emissary to ask Elizabeth for her "hand" who in turn sends him packing and then Bertie asks and receives a fast YES~ and Marrys for love. also excellent is the evil depiction of Edward and Wallis Simpson~ who is briefly on the screen but we hate her too~ Well done and moves along very well covers it just right in 100 ... I had this DVD in my library and I ordered this DVD to give as a gift to another Anglophile. It's the story of the current Queen's parents, from the time Princess Elizabeth & her younger sister was a younger girl Princess Margaret Rose were young girls. Included in this story is the abdication of King Edward VIII, and King George VI being crowned. It also gives the accurate impression of King George V and his critical and insulting manner. I wanted to keep my copy, which is part of a larger DVD set, entitled The Windsors. Yes, for Anglophiles, this is an excellent drama, but highly "spot-on" with most details.I had this DVD in my library and I ordered this DVD to give as a gift to another Anglophile. Delightful Royal Romance
Masterpiece Theater has done an excellent job in producing this story of the marriage of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It is inspiring to watch a couple maintain a strong marriage overcoming many hurdles in very stressful times. This couple rightfully became a symbol of the British spirit of fortitude and resistance during WWII. James Wilby as George VI and Juliet Aubrey as Elizabeth portray this couple in a touching way. Many humorous moments occur in this movie, one example being the scene where Princess Elizabeth is showing her mother and grandmother her wedding gifts. In leaders I admire the most integrity, fortitude, and patriotism. I like this movie because it tells the story of a King and Queen with these qualities.Masterpiece Theater has done an excellent job in producing this story of the marriage of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
