  • Kind of Fun, Hard to Follow...

This is an interesting book from a very interesting author. Unfortunately, for some reason, I found it very difficult to follow. Lots of old names and quick changes in locale, along with Chabon's typically obtuse writing made this book hard to follow. I loved Kavalier and Clay and also Yiddish Policeman's Union, but this one not so much. I like the premise of an old-style swashbuckling adventure, and the characters are great, I just found it hard to stitch the chapters together.

  • Unusual Excellence

I believe that Michael Chabon is America's best novelist. His ooeuvre displays the widest and deepest range of literary talent. Understatement Caveat: This slim novella is very unusual. Chabon manages to pen this brief adventure tale using truly arcane syntax. Somehow, while an amazingly high proportion of the terms employed are archaic or foreign, Chabon manages to supply the much-needed context that permit the reader to continue apace.
