About this product

Product Information

All Neal Page (Steve Martin) wants to do is make it home from a business trip in New York City and spend Thanksgiving with his family in Chicago. Instead, he finds himself rerouted from New York's La Guardia Airport to Wichita, Kansas. With no other options, Neal decides to share a room in a fleabag hotel with Del Griffith (John Candy), a shower-curtain-ring salesman and fellow stranded traveler. Although Neal finds Del to be a buffoon, he just can't seem to get away from him. To make matters worse, all their efforts to get back to Chicago fail as trains break down and rental cars catch on fire. Along the way they encounter crazy cabbies, redneck truck drivers, and oversexed bus passengers. John Hughes's (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB) first film to feature adults after his success with teen films features fine performances from Martin and Candy. Kevin Bacon, who appeared in Hughes's next film, SHE'S HAVING A BABY, makes a small but humorous appearance, as does Edie McClurg, known for her role as the high school secretary in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles captured the total terrors of depending on any form of public transport during the wiackiest annual holday.

Steve Martin has some great scenes, but John Candy was at his peak from the cheesy salesman grin to the abandoned puppy eyes when he's trying to sleep away from his travel mate. It gives "home for the holiday" a whole new meaning.

  • Maybe John Candy's best performance ever.

Cleverly understated and deceptively hidden under Neal Page's (Steve Martin) journey of misadventures, pratfalls and comedic errors to get back home in time for Thanksgiving dinner lies the aura of Del Griffith (John Candy). As Neal tries desperately to get back home, he and Del encounter everything from cancelled flights, motel room disasters, to rental car fires. The harder they try, the further off course they get. When Neal and Del finally part ways, Neal enjoys a chuckle as he thinks about all the bad luck he encountered on his journey home. He suddenly comes to the realization that Del is very much alone in this world. Director John Hughes drops this bombshell on us by cutting back and forth as Neil is reminicing by interplaying the scenes and Del's dialogue. The ...

  • Travel impact severe, like many airline experiences today!

The DVD was in perfect condition and played without a single problem. John Candy and Steve Martin were just as funny as I remember. The humor of the unspoken word and body language convey the feel of awkward situations better than foul language ever could. The stars sitting on Dell Griffiths trunk in the highway looking over their shoulder at the burning car is priceless.

  • The best film that John Hughes made wasn't a teen movie

When I think of "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" I smile. It is an absolutely wonderful movie. Yes, it is regarded as a comedy but when I think of it I think of it as more of a drama. The jokes don't get old. This is probably my favorite comedy of all time. Hughes takes the traveling nightmare genre to a whole new level. It's more a triumph in script writing than anything For those who don't already know Planes, Trains and Automobiles is simple in its approach. Everything that can go wrong does. It's a comic routine that can be funny, but here it is a trip to hysterical. The plot is simple enough as well. Neal Page (Steve Martin) is on his way home for Thanksgiving. He's your typical businessman that works in New York and has a family he wants to see in Chicago. The only problem is ...

  • Heart on Wheels

As expected, combing Martin and Candy brings a lot of laughs, and being directed by the late John Hughes (who brought is Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986) gives you plenty to enjoy. We lost both John Candy and Hughes, but they live on with their movies for generations to come.
