If you are interested in old tools, this is your guide.

This is an out of print gem by Eric Sloane who became an expert in old American tools. This illustrations are clear (meaning comprehensible) and his short descriptions tell you when and where a tool was used.

  • A Museum of Early American Tools by Eric Sloane

A classic I've read several times over since my teen years, Eric Sloane mastrerfully presents in his prose, pen and ink the history of early American tools and their uses. A very useful guide to the identification and use of now rare and unusual tools, Sloanes' in-depth research is priceless and certain to inspire the craftsman in many of his readers. I once owned a collection of his books, and I have profited greatly from the knowledge gained by reading them--my parents bought and refurbished an old home circa 1820, and I found numerous examples in real-life of what he has so ably depictred and written about. I recommend this and others of his works for any craftsman, historian or artist!

  • A simple book with a large message!

I recently was at a timberframing apprenticeship and noticed it among their library and became very interested in the information and pictures. Im a blacksmith and timberframer so this book is right up my alley. Sloane`s illustrations are simple but detailed. Everytime I read his books it takes me to a simpler time where things had a hand touched look. Also because everything really was handmade! Its a great title and gives adults a chance to revisit the days of just looking through a book and only looking for the pictures!Nothing wrong with that because the pics are highly fufiling! Great read HIGHLY RECOMENDED!

  • A great book!

I bought this for my wife who is a cabinet maker. She loves to read about how to make things with simple tools. The author, Eric Sloane, always writes great books. He uses his knowledge of how things were done in the old days along with his excellent drawings. I'd recommend any book by Eric Sloane.

  • Great for traditional woodworkers

Excellent drawings of various tools of the trade. Many very curious items that were used in early America. An extremely enjoyable guide to early tools.
