For his sixth collaboration with the director, Johnny Depp stars as Benjamin Barker aka Sweeney Todd, a barber falsely imprisoned by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). After leaving prison, he comes back to Victorian London to find his wife poisoned and his daughter held captive. As he plots his revenge, Sweeney joins forces with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), and while he preys on clients asking for a shave, his new partner turns the bodies into baked goods. But the judge still lives, and the razor-wielding madman wants his vengeance. Though it's a musical, SWEENEY TODD has more in common with Italian horror films such as SUSPIRIA than it does with CHICAGO. Even the horror-musical hybrid LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS pales in comparison to the darkness found here. Previous Burton-Depp pairings have veered toward the macabre, but this reaches a glorious new level. Though they've made excellent films apart, their partnership has produced some of their best work, including EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD, and now SWEENEY TODD. Depp demonstrates his rock-band roots as the antihero of the title with another amazing performance, while Bonham Carter is both hilarious and heartbreaking as the eager Mrs. Lovett. But credit also belongs to production designer Dante Ferretti, director of photography Dariusz Wolski, and, of course, Burton, for showing a sooty London that is just as dark as the film's subject matter. Source composer Sondheim should also be recognized for the haunting songs that threaten to stick in viewers' heads, but the film as a whole also deserves to be remembered for its beauty and brutality.

First off let me say my 20 & 17 year old sons loved it! Sweeney Todd follows the vicious cycle of revenge as Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) returns home to London to punish those that wronged him long ago. Assuming the alias of Sweeney Todd and setting up a barber shop over Mrs. Lovett's (Helena Bonham Carter) meat pie restaurant, the two enter into a heinous partnership that will allow Barker to exact his revenge. Not exactly the stuff of most musicals, is it? And the music and lyrics are from Stephen Sondheim, that most complex and witty of American musical theatre geniuses. A Funny, Disturbing, & Bloody Great Film!
I was never really a fan of musicals at all. I don't know why I went to see this in theatres, but after the film was over it was put on one of my favorite films list. The musical and story was suited for Tim Burton and his style of filming. Johnny Depp and Helena Carter did an amazing job with their roles, along with Alan Rickman. In fact, every actor did an amazing job. The songs were done so well, and the killings gave it that old school horror film feel. I loved the gore and blood. I loved the environments. I loved this film period. Definitley on my top 5 list of 2007. I just purchased the 2 Disc Special Edition, and it's a great pleasure going through these songs and watch Sweeney cut those throats! Bloody Excellent !
By far the darkest, most tragic and moving musicals I have seen in a while. This has to be Depp's finest portrayal yet. We are brought to love and hate his character conjuctively but made to feel sorrow in a time that life was very difficult for not only the poor but everyone. The music is stunning, the costumes period accurate and astonishing and all the characters portray their roles marvelously. (**** out of ****) The story sticks with you long after you have seen it and makes you realize yes, sometimes, life is very cruel. A must see for anyone who enjoys Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter. It is also refreshing to see Alan Rickman in a musical role (exceptionally acted and befitting) as well as Sasha Baron Cohen. Sweeney Todd is the story of a successful man, who because of the greediness of a politician, loses his wife and his daughter. Then, when he returns, he seeks revenge on this man, a woman in town recognizes him as the man from that was done this wrong, and has compassion on him. When he begins as a skilled barber, it goes well for a short time, till he is recognized by a man that threatens to reveal his secret to the town, since that would ruin him, Sweeney Todd decides to kill him in his barbershop. The lady has a sick plan that solves the new dilemma of getting rid of his body. As the movie goes on, Sweeney Todd continues to kill to help out the woman, as she falls in love with him, and he awaits the politician. Then everything unfolds for him when people unexpectedly begin to ... Sweeney Todd is the story of a successful man, who because of the greediness of a politician, loses his wife and his daughter.
