About this product

Product Information

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's recent bestseller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.

    Right to the point!

The book tells it like it is. Religion of any kind is a holdover from when people had no answers and feared the dark, wild animals and other humans. They invented gods and devils of all kinds. As understanding increases to this day, people try to hang on to religion and crazy human fabricated books and try to adapt them to current knowledge or just not believe that the earth goes around the sun. All I can suggest is "read it if you dare". There is no problem with spirituality, we just don't need a man-made god to have the experience.

  • God in NOT great

The book is exactly what it says on the cover. A narrative about what's wrong with organized religion, and how the world has become a much more dangerous and frightening place in the name of religion. Of course, it's not about god, but about how people manipulate and brainwash other people in the name of their particular god. I knew it was bad; the terrorists we are dealing with now are a prime example; but it's even worse than I imagined and has been this way for over 2000 years. The author is an expert on his subject and submits the simple facts and practical examples for your perusal. It's one of the most frightening books I've ever read.

  • God Is Not Great

This book was exactly as described and arrived in a timely manner. I purchased this book because I have recently read another book on the same subject, "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris which was very enlightening and wanted to see what Mr. Hitchens had to say. I haven't started reading "God Is Not Great" yet because I am currently reading books on the threat of Islam, mostly by Robert Spencer - the last one was "Stealth Jihad" which should be read by every non-Muslim in America - it's a real wake up call. But I'm currently starting on "Cruel and Usual Punishment" by Nonie Darwish which is about Sharia (Islamic Law). Did you know that President Obama has nominated Harold Koh, the dean of the Yale Law School, to be one of the ...

  • God is Not Great

I'm half way through this book. I am learning more about various beliefs, superstitions and religions than I ever did in 12 years of religious training. While I don't agree with the author on some things, and I know there are at least a few mistakes in the book, he makes many valid points which really make you THINK and for the first time you realize it's "okay" to ask questions, and that it is actually a GOOD thing to question rather than accept blindly. This was purchased on the recommendation of a family member with whom I had a very candid discussion. He thought this might interest me and he was correct. I am finding it fascinating.

  • God Is Not Great

Christopher Hitchens is one of a handful of the most recognizable atheists in Western Culture, and his skill with the English language turns his message into a thing of enjoyment and delight. I found myself carrying this book to appointments so that I would not have to waste the time that I had reading something else. This is a second copy of this title that I have purchased as the first is on loan and I didn't want to be without this excellent nonfiction work. Do yourself a favor and buy two copies of this book. It is a life changer.
