    Worst Canon item I've ever owned

    I bought one brand new and after 3 years the tape would not load. The door simply stopped working. I bought a used one on ebay so I could at least watch my old tapes and it did the same thing after a week. These weren't cheap to start with but they sure didn't last.

    Canon fixed problems they had with this version from the earlier cameras.

    Unlike the ZR60, the ZR70 is far more versatile with more storage capability and ease of use. Auto-focus, battery life,and night vision recording in low light are the features I appreciate the most. I upgraded from the ZR60 due to the video wentout on it, and it was more economical to upgrade than to repair. These camera's are plentiful and inexpensive. I like the versatility of using either a tape or storage card. Ample plugins as well. The ZR60 did not have the card option.

    If you insist on buying one, don't expect it to last.

    Stay away from the ZR series camcorders. I had a ZR65mc that suddenly stopped ejecting. This one did the same. I see countless reports from others affirming the bad design. Also, the audio defaults to 12-bit 32K so you have to go into the menue every time to change it to something listenable (16-bit 48K). This particular one clearly still samples at 12-bit 32K even in the 16-bit 48K mode, though my ZR65 did not have that issue. AVOID!

    Canon digital camcorder bundle

    Love it. Use it to play older home videos . it has enabled me to recover videos I thought were lost forever trapped on small tapes from 10 years ago.

    cheaper than repair cost

    We own another canon zr70 which had given us good service until we loaned it to some friends to video their son. The next time we tried to use it [several weeks later], it would not eject the cartridge. It would not record or play the video either. I checked into repair costs, and it was cheaper to buy another used one than to have our old one fixed. The camera we ordered on E-Bay came just as described and works perfectly. When I get the time, I am planning to record our old videos on dvd's.
