About this product

Product Information

From the bestselling author of Band of Brothers and D-Day , the definitive book on Lewis and Clark's exploration of the Louisiana Purchase, the most momentous expedition in American history and one of the great adventure stories of all time. In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River to the Rockies, over the mountains, down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean, and back. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, made the first map of the trans-Mississippi West, provided invaluable scientific data on the flora and fauna of the Louisiana Purchase territory, and established the American claim to Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Ambrose has pieced together previously unknown information about weather, terrain, and medical knowledge at the time to provide a vivid backdrop for the expedition. Lewis is supported by a rich variety of colorful characters, first of all Jefferson himself, whose interest in exploring and acquiring the American West went back thirty years. Next comes Clark, a rugged frontiersman whose love for Lewis matched Jefferson's. There are numerous Indian chiefs, and Sacagawea, the Indian girl who accompanied the expedition, along with the French-Indian hunter Drouillard, the great naturalists of Philadelphia, the French and Spanish fur traders of St. Louis, John Quincy Adams, and many more leading political, scientific, and military figures of the turn of the century. High adventure, high politics, suspense, drama, and diplomacy combine with high romance and personal tragedy to make this outstanding work of scholarship as readable as a novel.

MICHAEL BESCHLOSS "Only Stephen Ambrose, with his love of the Northwest and his deep understanding of the American past, clould have written this luminous and lyrical book. 5-star seller. I buy books often from this seller as I know the books in most cases are very good with no markings and the binding is tight(not loose or falling apart). Books come as quickly as Amazon. I figure why pay a lot. When a book is recently published I can understand paying more. Thrift books is about the only seller I buy from on ebay, as I know the books are in good or perfect condition.1

For Those That Love History of the Westward Expansion

Full disclosure: this will make the fourth copy I’ve bought. This is such a compelling biographically and historically accurate account of the great Lewis and Clark Expedition. The expedition actually began several years before the launch, with much planning and preparations such as learning how to draw, detail, and classify plant and wildlife they would encounter that had not been seen by people east of the Mississippi. The book is detailed and taken from actual journals and accounts. The reason I bought my 4th copy is that I’ve given the others to friends and family that have shown interest in our travels along the Lewis and Clark trails from St Louis to the Pacific Ocean. This is a great book. Stephen Ambrose is a historian with a knack for keeping it interesting.

  • Undaunted Courage

I decided to buy this book because I had previously read "This Vast Land" also a book about Lewis & Clark by author Stephen E. Ambrose. "Undaunted Courage" did not grab my attention as much as "This Vast Land" did. "Undaunted Courage" was much more factual with less raw adventure. But if you are a fan of Lewis & Clark and the exploration of the American west you will still enjoy this book very much. Stephen Ambrose is a great author and I have read many of his books. This particular book was not my favorite of his but it is still well worth your time to read it.

  • Compelling read!

It is an excellent historical novel. Just wish the print was larger in the book I purchased. If you have an interest in the topic, you will enjoy Ambrose's writing.

  • Amazing Book

Had an old paperback but this was worthy of owning this book in hardback. Has to be one of the best books I have ever read, and I have read many. Includes information on what went into the expedition, the many obstacles and interactions with the many Indian tribes along their amazing journey.

  • foundational history that inspires gratitude

It's a hefty read, detailed, but true. Real people, real human nature, adventure, tragedy. Americans would do well to understand how the expansion west happened.
