Tom Brown's School Days is about a boy's school in Victorian England. Tom Brown is played by a very young Alex Pettyfer, the headmaster by Stephen Fry, and Flashman by Thomas Beattie. The main character, Tom Brown, always seems to have a knack for being at the center of any trouble, when in truth, Flashman is the real culprit! Flashman is a bully who constantly picks on the younger boys, especially Tom. Based on a book, perhaps schools should use it as a reading assignment or show the movie to emphasize bullying. As time passes, you can see Tom get more mature and try help his classmates. This is one of several versions, one starring Freddie Barthlomew in the 1934 version. This was a made-for-tv movie in 2005. Any version is good but this one really stands out.

In honesty, I, purchased this movie out of curiosity after seeing Alex Pettyfer in a couple of movies. I also like movies that are set back in the day. It kinda gave me the vibe of a male version of Anne of Green Gables, just set in a different setting and time. I think Stephen Fry is a brilliant actor to a degree in the movies I have seen him play and He played the school master well. I really did enjoy the movie to a degree. Honestly, I will say there were some scenes that seemed fast and a bit confusing for me. I would have liked to seen more of a storyline in some areas. Yet, I will say, from what I watched it was entertaining. I enjoyed how Tom Brown came in as a vulnerable young boy, but starts to stand his ground against the bullies of the school, including becoming a guardian to some extent himself. I was not fancy about how he was so bullied on some things. I felt it seemed like that was some harsh abuse(roasting, over a ticket) etc..but the movie probably portrayed it mildly to reality. No doubt. It was sad how for a moment, it looked like the system corrupted a sweet boy to become callus and a bit of a bully himself, but that again is a part of some reality no. Alex Pettyfer, as a young actor, played the part very well I have to say. I felt for his character, especially in the end. He has grown in his acting since this movie, but it is always nice to see where they began. Alex was just lovely. On the other hand I kinda like it when you find a character you love to hate to the point where you find justice that he is finally beaten at his own game...and "Flashman" did just that. I think the actor that portrayed him, did a lovely job as well of being the biggest bully. Overall I thought the British movie version of Tom Brown was interesting and worth the purchase.Read full review
Nice remake of an old classic. The young actor ALex Petyfer delivers a believable performance. Although the storyline is somewhat modified from the 1940's Freddie Bartholomew/Jimmy Lydon version, (the character "Tom" displays a more rebellious attitude than previous versions) the ending seems to redeem it. Unfortunatelly the DVD format contains only the film and lacks any bonus features, subtitles or additional languages other than English. Overall, if you like the Tom Brown story, you will enjoy this film.
I thought it was well staged and performances were superior. An excellent effort! Though the previous films of Tom Brown's School Days were excellent in their time, they are becoming quite dated and the series shown recently on Masterpiece Theater is lacking in production values. All in all if you're looking for a film that captures the spirit of Hughes' novel, this is the one I would recommend.
It was a very well written and well acted movie. You will love the good guys and hate the bad guys. Everyone gets what they deserve in this one, and I recomend buying this.
