    lawnmower stop dead on pull start

    A lawnmower a friend has would not allow you to pull the starting handle all the way.the one time when it did start it ripped the handle back.after some research, i find out most lawnmowers have what is call a compression release on the cam shaft.to lift up the exhaust valve like 10 thou.off its seat so you can crank it.in 40 years of cutting the lawn i never knew this as it always works on my mowers.what happens to this flimsy mechanism is either the spring brakes or the the metal part brakes.bad news is they don;t sell just that part.you have to buy a new or used camshaft.if your mower is cheap at 200 dollars just junk it ,the shaft new is 95 dollars. if you have a 500 and up lawnmower it may be worth to get it fixed or buy the new part and fix it yourself.my neighbors mower was 2 years ...
