About this product

Product Information

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto--of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized--is one of the greatest moments in literary history. A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was thirty years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Reviews
"I think A Farewell to Arms is Hemingway's greatest novel, the truest. It's also heartbreaking." --Edna O'Brien "We can't seem to stop using a certain kind of elevated, heroic language about war and it is our duty always to puncture it. No one has ever done that as eloquently as Hemingway, through the accumulating weight of his sentences, and the emotional clarity, the disgust and also the reverence for what has been done." --Tobias Wolff

  • Hemmingway At His Best, However Imperfect

A Farewell to Arms is a splendidly written book that will draw you deep into the story the entire way through. Hemmingway's simple yet powerful style of writing will bring you as close to the characters and events in a book as any ever will. The story is about a soldier and a nurse who meet during the war and fall in love. The characters are very human and easy to relate to. The characters go through some extremely dramatic experiences throughout the novel, but the beauty is that they are able to pull through them together and avert disaster many times. In doing, they develop a pure and true love that is completely unequaled in every way. This is a book not to be missed, however you should make a point to miss the final chapter. -Spoiler Warning- The ending is totally ...

  • Hemingway= Genius

This book is very very good. It is a story about an American in the Italian army and his love for a British nurse. They fall in love and get together. It shows the lengths people go to so that they can be together. The book is very descriptive and can almost make you feel like if you're in Italy during this time. I almost could not have put it down. The ending is also amazing as you experience a shocking twist. This book is a classic.
