Metal Gear Solid and Goldeneye 007 fans take note: you need this game. Sure, main character Jean-Luc Cougar has a silly name, but his covert moves and daunting assignment rival that of a better-known, suit-wearing spy. Winback: Covert Operations is one of those games--you know, the hyper-engrossing, atmospheric type that suck you in until the graveyard shifters' lunch breaks. As S.C.A.T. (Strategic Covert Actions Team) members, players must disable a rash of terrorists who've taken over a powerful laser satellite defense system capable of leveling large regions with one burst. Jean-Luc stealthily plunges into the control center, buried deep in a mountainside, lined with bad guys. This isn't a first-person shooter; the over-the-shoulder view provides plenty of screen space to plan each sneaky move, going for surprise attacks rather than all-out, bullets-flying action. Once the player learns the somewhat complex, though natural and intuitive controls, manipulating Jean-Luc becomes an unconscious act. The fluid combination of The Matrix-style moves is entirely impressive: nothing like slinking silently against a wall, somersaulting into the open, picking off a terrorist, and then rolling into a crouch behind a crate. Just beautiful. --Eric Twelker Pros: * Excellent player controls, though difficult to master * Nice animation * Well-paced storyline Cons: * Simple weapons * Camera often errant, getting stuck behind walls or at bad angles at the worst possible times * Game saves only after reaching checkpoints, resulting in frequent restartsRead full review
winback is in many ways a metal gear solid clone of sorts. its a shooter that suffers from poor camera angles and glitchy controls. the game itself is fun but some of the story elements lend one to question its merits especially "SCAT". the graphics were pretty standard fare however the game suffers from immense fog and most of the difficulty that arises is from the unintuitive controls that lend the poor jean luc the personality of a bullet sponge. the version for the playstation 2 is mroe polished than the one for the n64 not surprisingly.
Better than Goldeneye! This is 1 of the best games ive ever played. Awesome graphics, great storyline, action packed shoot em up game. Very underated. This is the 2nd best n64 game ive played other than Zelda. Its pretty hard but well worth the time and for the average price of $8 used this game is a steal in value. You must play this game and get the winback music stuck in your head!
This game is pretty fun, and the graphics are decent for the N64 system. that story line is pretty good also. Gameplay is solid and the controls once you get them down are good also. I played this game quite a few times and enjoyed it. You may wanna try this 1 out...
I enjoy this game mostly because of the story. An anti-terrorist group called, S.C.A.T. is trying to reclaim a building from some terrorists in the beginning. However, their helicopter is shot down and they are separated. You play as Jean-Luc, as he attempts to carry out his mission and find all his comrades. There are also several multi-player levels one can play with up to 4 friends.
