ReviewsKovacs's translation is a tour de force ... In general, the notes accompanying the translation, explaining such things as geographical and mythological names, are judiciously chosen, concise, and crystal clear... I have nothing but praise for [Kovacs's] scholarship, and the lucidity of his writing, both as translator and commentator. SynopsisThree plays by ancient Greece's third great tragedian. One of antiquity's greatest poets, Euripides has been prized in every age for the pathos, terror, and intellectual probing of his dramatic creations. The new Loeb Classical Library edition of his plays is in six volumes. Helen , in Volume V, employs an alternative history in which a virtuous and faithful Helen was falsely blamed for the actions of her divinely created double in Troy. Here too are Phoenician Women , the battle between the sons of Oedipus for control of Thebes; and Orestes , recasting Orestes' lot after he murdered his mother., Euripides (ca. 485-406 BC) has been prized in every age for his emotional and intellectual drama. Eighteen of his ninety or so plays survive complete, including Medea , Hippolytus , and Bacchae , one of the great masterpieces of the tragic genre. Fragments of his lost plays also survive., Euripides has been prized in every age for the pathos, terror, surprising plot twists, and intellectual probing of his dramatic creations. In this fifth volume of the new Loeb Classical Library Euripides, David Kovacs presents a freshly edited Greek text and a faithful and deftly worded translation of three plays. For his Helen the poet employs an alternative history in which a virtuous Helen never went to Troy but spent the war years in Egypt, falsely blamed for the adulterous behavior of her divinely created double in Troy. This volume also includes Phoenician Women , Euripides' treatment of the battle between the sons of Oedipus for control of Thebes; and Orestes , a novel retelling of Orestes' lot after he murdered his mother, Clytaemestra. Each play is annotated and prefaced by a helpful introduction.
