This DVD comes with the 2003 double CD edition of Sir Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." It is the insider's story of how the now classic musical collection was created. There are priceless interviews with musical composer Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin. The DVD features both archived and new performances by Sir Elton John, including rare footage from original recording sessions of: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road; Jamaica Jerk-Off, The Ballad of Danny Bailey; Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting; Bennie and the Jets; Sweet Painted Lady; Roy Rogers; and Candle in the Wind. During Sir John's piano playing of "Candle in the Wind" his younger hands switch to his older hands, and remind me of how the song's lyrics were switched to the funeral song for Princess of Wales, Lady Diana. The commentaries that the two main musical-lyrical composers make about why and how they worked together, and how their recordings of certain songs came into being are quite delightful insider's perspectives which make this DVD not simply a visual performance DVD but also one with the qualities of a fine documentary~Read full review

The 70s were a transitional period for rock music. What had been rock became pop because the music was turning towards much heavier metal. Elton John and Bernie Taupin's songs resonated then just as they still do now with a very wide variety of music lovers. I believe that's what makes this particular collection of their songs a true classic. When I've been in the audiences of Sir Elton's concerts, it's amazing to look around at the diversity of age, ethnicity, gender and race of people who are singing along, knowing all the words to these songs. If the wide spread public's appreciation of this music, from continent to continent, generation to generation, across so many races and classes isn't evidence of what makes art classic, then what is?
This is a great album from an incredible artist. It lends itself perfectly for 5.1. From start to finish, this album is something I can listen to over and over again. It is how DVDAs are supposed to sound. I have a few of these and some sound better than others. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a classic album and listening to it in this format is like listening to it for the first time. Buy this if you have the means and you will not be dissapointed.
