What you've got: a juicy debut novel by a clever gal descended from the Plymouth Rock set, about a clever but bored gal descended from....Right! Cornelia Read's in-the-know corner of the mouth quirky prose is just the informed and tartly juicy stuff that pulls you in from the start. Dark humor, sly wink-wink innuendos and the desire to escape a hellish job at an East Coast paper will have you howling, chuckling and nodding in recognition of Read's wise, real and earthy prose featuring that neophite sleuth, Madeline, from the got-pedigree-but-little-bucks side of the tracks. The mystery surrounds her cousin and a couple of dead girls in a 20 year old murder investigation. The New York State Fair, a nearby corn field and few clues comprise this cold case made vastly more interesting by the gun-packing snoop with the wise acre dialogue and odd bits and snippets of an ex-debutante's life. Pacing and characterization are remarkable for a first novel, which doesn't feel self-conscious and grabs the reader straight from the get-go. I'll be looking for more from this talented and amusing new author who truly has something fresh and original to offer. File under "Q" for quirky good.Read full review
I had the pleasure of hearing Cornelia Read, author of A Field of Darkness, read a pre-publication selection of this riveting first novel at a writer's workshop last summer. Couldn't wait for the entire story!!
