Too many times, after viewing a remade classic movie, I'm left wondering, Why bother?! Nightmare Alley, directed by one of the great directors of our time (or any time), honors the original film, true to the story & spirit, enhancing perspectives & deepening character--it's got soul. The all-star cast rises to the occasion, & the lavish sets envelope the viewer in the story & times where it took place.

Guillermo del Toro's remake of the Fox noir classic has everything... and maybe a bit too much. The performances are fine, especially Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett but the story isn't as streamlined or focused as the original film. Also, there's a backstory for Cooper's character that makes him more unlikable as it unfolds. And come on, did we really NEED to see the Geek bite the head off of a chicken? We got the idea in the original movie without being so graphic! The production design is marvelous, evoking the 40s time period beautifully. On its own, this "Nightmare Alley" is a good film, but the 1947 version is better...and with a shorter running time.
