This book is perfect for anyone who knows the musical Wicked. It has wonderful photos, lots of information about the "behind the scenes" stuff, and just plain looks cool. Wicked the Grimmerie takes you from the beginning of the Oz world, with information about L. Frank Baum and his books, through the 1939 MGM Movie, to recent Oz spin-offs like The Wiz, to the Novel by Gregory Maguire that inspired the musical. Then the fun begins! With interviews with the main creative team (Marc Platt, producer; Winnie Holzman, writer; Stephen Schwartz, music) and just about everyone who had something to do with the crafting of Wicked, the Grimmerie gives you a complete look at how the spell was cast that produced one of the finest and most popular broadway hits ever. If you've seen the show and have been simply blown away by it, you will want this book. It covers all aspects of the show with all the people involved, great photography and it has a antiqued, "battered" design style that is meant to replicate the Grimmerie that Elphaba uses in the show. I just love this book! I saw the show in San Francisco, and we're planning on a repeat visit! OMG I wish they would hurry and make it into a movie already!!!If you've seen the show and have been simply blown away by it, you will want this book. One good thing about this book is that is was so different from the play that one doesn't spoil the other. The story revolves around the life of Elphaba, a green child born to parents living in the land of Oz. Through her childhood and school years, you watch her deal with the problems of being different than everyone else, as well as having a family that is less than functional. Her college years link her up with others who have the same subversive thoughts and purposes, and it leads her to a life committed to overturning the evil rule of the Wizard. The book ends at the same place as the movie, with the death of the witch at the hands of Dorothy. But what you find is that Elphaba's quest for ... But what you find is that Elphaba's quest for the ruby slippers was really nothing more than an attempt to reclaim a family heirloom, and that she really just wanted to be left alone to live out her life in peace. Overall, I suppose the book is worth a read for those who like their fantasies dark, but I feel that I must add this advice: If you have seen the light-and-airy Broadway musical that was (VERY, VERY loosely) based upon this story, you may be disappointed and even bored with the serious tone and bleakness throughout this book.
