We had a tub drain flange that had corroded to the point the cross bars had broken off and you could not get ahold of it to remove it. At that time I didn't know about a "tub drain extractor" so I called a few plumbers to get an estimate on having them remove it. One quote over the phone was $399.00 if it didn't take them more than an hour to do the job. The other one quoted $512.00 in a worse case scenario if they had to cut it out from underneath the tub and replace it! After the sticker shock wore off I got on YouTube, typed in "how to remove a stuck tub drain flange" and watched a guy using this handy gadget. I called a few plumbing supply stores to see if they had it. Only one carried it and their price was a whopping $120.00! My inner stubborn girl would not allow me to be robbed with that price tag so I ordered the extractor here and it arrived within a week. Once it arrived I discovered I did not have a large enough drill adaptor to fit in the slot on top of the extractor but found that my Lighted Lug Wrench handle for removing nuts to change a tire was the perfect size and the extended handle provided extra leverage to remove the old flange. Then we got to work removing the old flange and THIS EXTRACTOR WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! It is solidly built and worth every penny! Read full review

Probably could work well in many cases. Our drain had been in over 25 years and I was unable to put enough pressure on this tool to prevent it from slipping. Thus I was unable to remove drain. Ordered another device that expands with a 1 7/16 inch wrench. Not easy but it removed drain. So my recommendation is - it depends.

I broke the crossbars in a 35+ yr old tub drain using a removal tool specific - kind of expected that would happen. This tool was my plan B. I spent about 5 min beating and turning this easy-out tool to no avail, but remembered reading others used heat first - hot water for a few minutes or a hair dryer. I had a heat gun and gave the drain a a shot of high heat for a minute before trying to remove it again. Lo and behold! The old drain starting turning with almost no effort. Worth every penny!
