Travis Tritt's Premium Second LP!
In 1991 I had never heard of Travis Tritt, nor had I often listened to Country Music. I had heard it growing up in a small Texas town and being around barns and horses, but by 1991 I was a solid Rock-N-Roller. But rock had changed...and so had Country! I was watching TV one night and saw a documentary that changed my music listening from then on! It was about this guy. Travis Tritt, and the making of a video for a song called "Anymore". A song about a Vietnam Vet that was wounded and came back paralyzed and was rejecting love.The thing that struck me was how this Travis had spent a lot of time at a VA Hospital with Vets and had learned their stories and their experiences. There were important people in my life that had gone to Nam and returned in various mental or physical states. This ... In 1991 I had never heard of Travis Tritt, nor had I often listened to Country Music. You think Garth was the first with a controversial video? Travis's video didn't get much air play on TV when it came out. It was graphic. It was thought of as not "politically correct" enough. But the song was grand and soulful and haunting. So I started to listen for that song on (gads!) Country radio! I started watching TNN for the video.That year I went on a Vacation and stepped into a store and saw the Cassette with THAT song and I bought my first Country Music! "Anymore"is still the standout song of the LP and of Travis, but I dicovered so much more! "Country Club" was his Debut LP and is also a fine compilation of music,but this one is when Tritt really hits his stride! What I heard was a combination of soul, country and the Southern Rock I had grown up with! Shades of Skynard and The Allmann Brothers,even Stevie Ray Vaughn. Tritt was, and alway has been, an inticate and accomplished guitarist. In my opinion, he paved the way for today's country Guitar Faves like Keith Urban. This LP highlights that. He can have fun,too! As seen in his oher Hit "Here's a Quarter", the song I think everyone has at least ONCE wanted to sing to an EX! Him and Marty Stewart have a miraculous blending of harmonies and voices in "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'". Rarely have two voices worked so well and blended together so great! (I thought they were brothers at first!) They had fun & you can hear it! "Bible Belt" is a rollicking rocker that was later in the movie "My Cousin Vinny". There are also more like that! Then there are two other standout soulful Ballads that tug at the heartstrings. "Nothing Short Of Dying" and "Someone For Me" are strong love ballads. The first of the thought of love being lost, the second of searching for love. Travis Tritt usually writes his own songs and his skills at weaving words into feelings are superb. The LP is ended on a high Southern Rock & Roll note with "Homesick", a jamming song about Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix and Classic Rockers (like me!).It really showcases Tritt's guitar expertise and vocal chops! After all these years, this LP still holds up as a Premium Effort by a memorable Musician! Travis Tritt turned me on to Country Music. Even now, I don't think he gets the credit due. He started a new line of "Outlaws" and paved the way for Montgomery Gentry and Big & Rich. There are none like him today & this LP shows there probably never will be!I once saw him fill in for Garth at an Award's when Garth's wife was in labor. In a LAST MINUTE performance Travis sat on the stage with only his guitar and did "Anymore",it bought down the house! THAT is Travis Tritt!
