    Aimee Mann - Smilers

    Aimee Mann's sixth studio album, 'Smilers', for me was much like 'The Forgotten Arm'. When listening to that album for the first few times, I just couldn't get into it at all, the narrative theme of the album put me off and I didn't listen to it for a long time. 'Smilers' was the same, I listened to it once or twice, no song really grabbing my attention, and I resigned it to the not-much-listened-to file. However, being such a big Aimee Mann fan, I gave it a couple more goes, and I'm glad I did. This is an album of fantastic depth. Each song worms it's way into your subconscious, slowly but surely. Mann manages to create soundscapes you can get lost in, most of the songs have a haunting lullaby-esque feel to them. Standouts include 'Borrowing Time', '31 Today' and 'Ballantines'. My ...
