Art Brut have managed to deliver one of the great debut pop records of a decade in "Bang Bang Rock & Roll". With guitar hooks so catchy you will find your self humming the tune to "Good Weekend" and "Bad Weekend" every time your brain slips into anything less than absolute concentration. Past the truely brilliant and distinctive guitar riffs Art Brut manage to perfect the essential art of a great tune, the ability to build a song up, bring it down and build it up again in a way that brings a tingle rushing through your spine and gets you jumping round your living room in bizarre fashion during songs like "Modern Art and "Formed a Band". This album is littered with beatifully crafted and instantly memorable 2minute and 30 second gems. The first track of the album "Formed a Band" is a genius start to a debut record and offers an explosive introduction, setting the tone for Eddie Argos' unique style of lyric and delivery which wanders from talking narrative to passionate bordeline shouting/singing. He contnues to give his opinion on modern culture during "Bad Weekend" and "Modern Art", his school sweetheart in "Emily Kane" and his struggle with impotence, yes thats right, impotence in "Rusted Guns of Milan". This album will divide new listeners straight down the middle. Some won't get the unconventional lyrics and dismiss them as a joke band, though many like myself and their growing fanbase will take Art Brut straight to their heart and refuse to let go. This band are my band of the moment and this album is a must for all music lovers with a sense of humour and appreciation of catchy guitars. My stand out track is "Bad Weekend". With the opening line "Haven't read the NME in so long, don't know what genre we belong" this song really outlines what Art Brut are all about; bucking the trend, not going with the masses and doing something that they love, no matter what anyone else is doing.Read full review
