About this product

Product Information

The 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 DT Alpha A-Mount telephoto zoom from Sony is has a 55-200mm focal length. For this DT-series lens, that's like having a 82.5-300mm telephoto lens in 35mm terms. It helps you shoot from a distance, so it’s a good tool to pack for things like wildlife tours where you might be spotting a tiger in the distance and want to see and capture it as if close up. It is also used for capturing events like sports games or concerts. This 55-200mm Alpha A-Mount telephoto zoom lens by Sony has been optimized for cropped image sensors, and this means it is ideal for certain smaller cameras rather than large full-frame ones. Essentially, it has been designed for APS-C-sized sensors used in many Sony Alpha DSLRs, because they have SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization built in. For that reason, they take more compact and lighter lenses. Specifically, it was made for APS-C Size / DT-Format Alpha & Minolta digital SLR models and is not recommended for full-bodied large devices because you would be doubling up on mechanics and unnecessarily increasing the weight of your kit. It effectively has your desired focal length when you use APS-C-sized units, with a varying length aperture that's fully dependent on the length chosen. For example, you can increase from f/32 to 45 or f/4.0 to f/5.6, depending on how much you increase the zoom. Using it at its mid-length you can work on some creative bokeh effects, with sharp subjects and softened surroundings. You can also capture close-ups, with a minimum focusing distance of 3.2 feet and a front-end filter diameter of 55mm. Another important specification is its 7x circular aperture blades, which produce seamless movement and let you create blurred background effects around your crisp subject. This lens comes equipped with a SAM, also known as a Smooth Autofocus Motor. This effectively gets rid of the need to use mechanical coupling within the camera body itself. No longer does drive power have to be transferred directly to the lens. Instead, the control signals transfer from the body to the SAM unit. This may sound complicated, but the end result is more precise, crisper photographs. Whether you are shooting in low light or bright conditions, with or without a filter, this lens performs to your expectations and shows beautiful results too. Dispersion glass is another feature on this lens. This low-light glass corrects certain waves of light when the camera is working at over 300mm, and this dramatically reduces the occurrence of chromatic aberrations. As well as being a practical and thoughtfully designed telephoto lens for specific cameras, the Alpha A-Mount by Sony is well made. It is constructed of 13 elements in 9 groups, as well as extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, which all help to deliver sharp, clear photos throughout the range. It weighs 10.41 oz. This is a well-thought-out piece of photographic equipment from Sony that goves high performance and is more practical to carry in your kit (providing you own the right camera with in-built stabilization) and extends a photographer’s love of the art and the quality of his images.

This seller is tremendous. I had purchased another lens from Gadjit and changed my mind. He immediately said it was OK to return it, which I did. Then I ordered a different lens from him and it just arrived. Both lenses were exactly as advertised. New open box. This explains his record of all positive feedback. Thank you.

    Crazy Bang for the Buck‼️

I cannot imagine how this lens can be had in like new condition for $30. Functionally outstanding as far as focus speed & full integration with the a77II, lightweight, & mind boggling ease of use when compared with older Minolta & Sony offerings. What it lacks in expensive build,, metal, & high end crisp images, it more then makes up for focal range & fitting well in multiple situations. As a long time collector of A mount lenses I deem this one a best buy for 98% of of the internet posting, “Joe walk around”, Sony A crop sensor digital photographers out there.

  • Better than you'd think

This is an affordable medium telephoto lens that is much more sharp than I expected. Having previously purchased a 50mm dedicated portrait prime lens which is tack sharp, I found the sharpness on this lens impressive enough to choose it over my prime for most portrait work. If you step back and zoom in on your subject it renders nice out of focus backdrops. I used it at multiple concerts and events and it performed very well especially in good light. For more intimate events you'll likely want a 24-70 to cover a wider range. If you are shooting in low-light there are better options. For daylight telephoto medium to long reach and sharp results at an affordable price, it's difficult to beat this lens!

  • Sony SAM lense affordable and capable of good IQ if you learn how to use it

The new range of Sony's standard "kit" lens with SAM are fantastic for their price, granted they will not give you the IQ of a G or Zeiss but in the right conditions and hands, they can certainly come very close. When I travel with my A57, the SAL 1855,55200,50/1.8 and 35/1.8 SAMs are always in my bag, helps a great deal that they are so light and affordable, which offsets the plasticky and not so solid build of the lense. Anyone who tells you they are no good actually doesn't know how to use them or is only interested in gear snobbery.

  • One of my favorite lenses.

This is my favorite outdoor lens. For the price it is a great purchase. It will focus quickly and accurately on my A33. I bought this to replace an old Minolta 100-200 f4.5. The Sony lens is better all around except it has a little slower f-stop at the longer lengths. The Sony has a lot less purple fringing, than the Minolta. I have not used, or wanted to use, the Minolta lens since I bought this. No lens does everything, but I find this lens very versatile for outdoor photography. For indoor photography it is has too long of focal length for family gatherings and such.

  • good start to rounding out your Alpha

My wife wanted a DSLR camera and after alot of research we chose the Sony Alpha A330. The camera is great easy to use. It didn't take long to go from just point and click to experimenting with apitures, distance, forground, background etc. The next step was to get different lens so this DT 55-200mm seemed like a good start. The new lens has opened up more picture taking than we expected getting those close up shots of faces or nature without moving physically closer so we don't loose the shot we see. Love the lens, will definately be buying more.
