Gummo is about the harsh reality of White Trash America. It's incredibly disturbing while watching, but just as interesting. What's most disturbing about this film is the fact that me, you, and everyone you know, knows people like this. Each of the characters are just as unlikable as the next, but some are more tolerable than others. I recommend you eat a nice meal before watching this movie, because you will feel disgusted, overwhelmed, and somewhat nauseated. The stark reality is what provokes the feeling if disgust, the beautiful vivid colors and imagery or Harmony Korine's work is what keeps you interested the entire time. I recommend this movie to viewers because while being disgusted and uncomfortable viewing this film, viewers can relate to some of the characters in tiny, microscopic ways. Gummo is more of a movumentry of the unfortunate lifestyle's of those in the Mid South. But has its strange twists and like a fatal accident it is hard to not watch. WTF! Will be a common expression you will exclaim as you watch. The story behind the movie is quite interesting as well. If you are into dark humor then this is a must! Warning NOT for cat lovers!

There are very few films which belong in this unique classification - "Honest Americana", Gummo could be the flagship for this. To me it is simply stated, coarsely revealed and beautifully portrayed ... small town American life. This is not a Hollywood glorified portrayal, but moreso the perfect depiction of a Midwest American small town daily struggle to make it another day. If you cannot identify or enjoy these characters then you should seek an island.

"A desire to point out the flaws in modern society isn't reason enough to make a film" wrote one reveiwer and I see it as the opposite. I feel as an adult I've grown out of fairytales and it's time to move on into the gruesome reality that is life. If you want a story about a mistreated stepchild turned princess get a Disney movie. Everything is not okay and this movie portrays reality.
I guess you could call this a cult film, wow... from the director of kids... this is a bizzare set of stories from this little, disturbed, poor, trashed, town in ohio. If you dislike animal cruelty, mistreatment of people with down syndrome, twins, or gay midets... This movie isn't for you. It is bizzare, and funny if you have the right sense of humor.
