some obvious hits but quite a few misses
This early cd from the Newsboys is a definite step towards pop music as they evolved. It is a good cd for teens, especially younger ones, with its upbeat sensibilities and positive message. Their talent is evident but this cd again lacks coherence, even with Steve Taylor at the production helm. While they are simultaneously trying to be rock, worship, and alternative, this cd ends up just being generic pop top-40 music. With their preachiness, this cd naturally didn't gain much airplay in the secular realm. This cd is bouncy and fun music, perfect for pre-teen girls. While these guys do have serious talent, that talent and their creative ability are not as evident here. They also continue to get away from their Aussie roots. Shine is, of course, an instant hit. It is definitely memorable and a staple in concert. Its encouraging evangelistic message is to be appreciated, even if all of Taylor's songwriting isn't decypherable. Hats off to them when they do try to bridge theological issues, even if somewhat haphazardly at times. Real Good Thing is one such attempt at exploring a divine paradox, of it being good that we don't get what we deserve and get what we don't deserve. Maybe two real good things in this expose on God's grace. Spirit Thing is a dance number that tries to put into human terms spiritual reality. There are a few that are also similar here, which tends to make this cd somewhat homogenous. This means that many of their songs here are forgetable also, an unfortunate reality on each of their cd's. I rated this one average because of their as yet unrealized potential, their on-going identity-crisis in terms of genre and style, other musical inconsistencies, and the quality of Take Me to Your Leader in comparison.

Is ok, but only one song I knew. But I have just started listening to the NewsBoys in the last year. Just seen them at concert and they started to play that older song that on this cd there. That's only reason I knew it...lol. The style is def different than the bands songs that are up to date. But if you like their older songs then you should love this cd. I was expecting something a little bit closer to the new stuff, that that has nothing to do with this item being bad. Its a descent cd.Is ok, but only one song I knew.
