  • Great for transferring old tapes to DVD

With no ATSC tuner these units are effectively obsolete for TV recording. They still have quite a following on the used market for tape transfers, however. In particular they are able to sync to the somewhat unstable signal generated by VHS and other consumer tape formats as well as reduce the noise inherent in them. The latter feature is what makes this machine so valuable. No modern recorder has this capability. Without it the video encoder overloads trying to compress the noise and results in a DVD that looks worse than the original tape. Though the recording quality is great on this machine it's very picky when it comes to media. It won't burn DVD+R's and the DVD-R's it generates sometimes play poorly on standalone DVD players. Luckily it does have an option to slow down the ...

  • POWERFUL piece of electronics.

This unit has a powerful combination of features. So powerful, a college course may be necessary to learn how to harness them. Fortunately, Toshiba has a toll free tech support staff who are knowledgeable. I have phoned them at least 15 times. The unit will record either on its built in hard drive or on the built in dvd disk drive. It has access to an off the air programming guide where I can select the program to automatically be recorded when I depress the red record button on the remote and it will record not only on that day, but every day the program is on the air. It can record the contents of a program previously recorded on the internal hard drive onto the built in dvd drive. Also can record contents of a vcr tape onto the units built in dvd drive or hard drive. One ...

  • Worth buying if you can find one.

I already have this DVR and wanted another because of it's TV Guide function and it's durability. I tried purchasing one of these DVRs from Toshiba brand new but it seems that Toshiba is no longer allowed to sell them in the United States.Even though I've tried others the Toshiba has shown itself to be the overall best DVR I have found so far. It runs quieter than others we have tried which means it's good for the bedroom. It's easy to record a program using the HDD with TV Guide function and even easier to rerecord it later to a DVD. I have done this often and with ease for my Grandchildren. I also like how I can program to record once, twice or even weekly. Then I watch them and delete them if I want to without having to use a DVD. And it really is great not having to pay cable ...

GOOD: Been using this model of Tosh for 3 or 4 years. Unreal how many movies I have recorded and put on DVD; Couple thousand? Not to mention converting VHS to DVD. Firewire (mini DV) from my camcorder to unit is a plus. BAD: Manual is hard to understand. If I remember correctly it was translated from Japanese, but not too accurately. I ended up finding a site that helped me learn the machine. Takes awhile for discs to load. Editing capabilities are very limited compared to what you can do on a comp. Have had 1 machine go bad but as I said I burn almost everyday. Has copyright protection. Only accepts certain brands of DVD. Sony, Verbatim, TDK. No Memorex. And only -R no +R. Remote is funky as reported.

  • Stay away from the RD-XS35

I had my RD-XS35 for less than 3 months before the DVD and hard drive both went bad within about 1 week of each other. I took it back to my place of purchase and after 6 weeks they gave up and returned my money. My previous DVD/DVR recorder was also a Toshiba and it lasted less than 2 years. I have a Panasonic which so far has been pretty good and much easier to use than the RD-XS35. I'm not going to be buying anymore Toshiba's they are just too hard to use and really don't hold up. Although, the TIVO service is way over priced they really do have it nailed. So if you are looking for a DVR and can swing ridiculous monthly or yearly fee, go TIVO. If a DVD recorder is necessary, buy a cheap recorder without the hard drive DVR.
