Seagate FreeAgent Extreme 1.5 Terabyte
This external hard drive is great for back-ups or for storing files, it has a nice feature that turns itself on and off with computer that saves energy. It is preformatted in NTFS so if you want it for windows earlier than Win2K then you will have to reformat it to be able to use it in Win98, Win95 ect. The unit stays cool if you stand it up on its side with the stand it comes with but gets warm when you lay it down flat wise. One thing I wish it could do is to be able to use it to mirror my hard drive for an easy install of operating system, so when you operating system is corrupt from experimenting you can reinstall it quickly. The back-up software is not too good for Vista 64 bit but there are plenty of other software you can use that ius just as good or better than the one seagate ... As we cram more important data into our computers, the need for additional storage capacity and back-up capability becomes critical. Video, photos, graphics and other content burn up gigs of drive space, often exceeding the capacity of the built-in drives on our desktops or laptops. I edit video on my Macs, and video uses 10gb per hour of storage. I quickly filled my 1TB drive to capacity. The Seagate listed on Ebay seemed ideal - priced at a few dollars more than my old 1TB drive, this drive offered 1.5x the storage in a smaller footprint. Before selecting this particular drive, be sureto determine if a USB input will be fast enough, or if you need Firewire, which transfers data at 4x the speed of USB. Firewire is essential for video capture. I compared the specs of this drive to others ... These features are important for future compatibility. Only the Seagate Extreme offers the Firewire; other Seagate models do not. Because I was using it with a Mac, I had to reformat the drive to match my Intel I-Mac and my operating system - not difficult on a Mac using Disc Utility. Windows users will not have to bother about reformatting. To avoid frustration, Mac users should keep in mind to use the proper format option to make the drive recognizable on Firewire. Because I wanted a boot-able backup, I partitioned the drive to make boot-able copies of all my computers. On Mac, only a Firewire drive will provide alternative boot. After partitioning, the computer would not recognize the drive on Firewire, only on USB. Not to worry - using USB, format the drive to match your Mac chip set and OS, then restart using Firewire. The icons should appear without a problem. When partitioning this drive, remember that the Seagate requires partitions to be multiples of four. Set up your first partition any size you want; the drive will automatically provide the correct multiples for subsequent partitions. None of these warnings are included in the documentation, which is somewhat sketchy. The drive also offers an auto backup option which is useful. I used Carbon Copy Clone, which is freeware, to successfully transfer ALL data from my computers to this drive, including the operating systems, application preferences, passwords, etc. This means I can not only restart any of my computers from the Seagate Extreme if I suffer a crash or major failure, but can restore everything and even operate from another computer if necessary. Because I give audio-visual presentations far from home, I need to know that in case of a computer crash or hard-drive disaster, the Seagate Extreme will enable me to go on with the show!

The Pros: Compact ;Firewire and Sata inputs The Cons: Unit comes with self loading software, which fails to load. The unit also has power settings that put the unit in standby after 15 minutes by default, and it does not readily come out of standby unless accessed through the Seagate software. Why add more cumbersome software when Windows Explorer can manage it so nicely? The unit also lacks cooling, the use of an external HD cooler is needed. The rubber feet supplied with the unit fall off easily, I've lost one already in the first day of use. The vertical stand position would allow better cooling anyway. I'd avoid this unit.
