In my opinion this story, like Gone With The Wind, is an all-time historic and cinematic masterpiece. It is engaging, has tried to be accurate without loosing a dramatic feel, and portrays western life like it very well might have been. The Indians' society is shown in some details throughout this story, and it is done in a very realistic manner. I'm sure Hollywood has dressed things up a bit, but the Indian heroes and villains are shown as the individuals they were. It is easy to grow to love the various characters throughout. The story ended the only way it could, on a downbeat note. People can be hateful now and back in those more natural days of our country. This DVD is fine as it is, but be advised it is not the director's cut. When you see the story in its 4 hour plus reading, you will truly appreciate what the writer intended it to be. You cannot go wrong owning and watching this story.Read full review

This movie hits home on simply -dozens- of levels at once. Courage, death, brutality, honor, frailty, hope, companionship, family, interaction of castes in humanity, interaction of humanity with animals, love, war, peace, ingenuity, breathtaking scenery and nature...it's all there if you allow yourself to look at it. It rightly won tons of awards, yet Costner and the movie were panned by many. To the critics (and to all those who broke our treaties with Native Americans) I spit on your grandmother's shadows. My thanks to the wonderful actors, all, to Michael Blake for the screenplay, to the cinematographers, and to all the others who made the movie absolutely realistic. The breathtaking Mary McDonnell won my heart, and if I'd been there, _I_ would have married her. Condolences to the mighty buffalo, whose ranks were wrongfully slaughtered for a human fad.Read full review

I have owned the VHS for years and recently decided to buy it on DVD and e-bay was the first place I looked. I love this movie and I got a great deal on it. This was one of the first movies I had ever seen that portrayed the Native Americans as anything other than complete savages. It showed their ingenuity, humor, honor and way of life in a respectful and realistic way. The scenery, acting, story and use of native language made for great entertainment, but I think with some educational aspects as well. It is also one of the few movies to have won best picture at the Academy Awards that I agreed with, it truly is a great movie.
love Kevin Costner movies and can now add this to my collection Graham Greene was fantastic in this movie

Arguably one of the greatest films ever made, and as time goes by, AFI will run this one up its all-time list. Perhaps the greatest coming-of-age, in-you-r-face revelation about what really happened to a lost civilization. The music, scope, and acting...well, this was done with a lot of care and time.
