About this product

Product Information

FRANKENSTEIN is James Whale's first stylish, expressionist film (INVISIBLE MAN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN) to grace the Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s (DRACULA, THE MUMMY). Scientist Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and his hunchbacked assistant, Fritz (Dwight Frye), embark on an unholy mission by stealing a body from a graveyard and a human brain from a medical college. Unbeknownst to Frankenstein, however, Fritz takes a violent and murderous abnormal brain. Henry's strange letters about his experiments worry his fiancée, Elizabeth (Mae Clark), and friends Victor (John Boles) and Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan). They arrive at Frankenstein's laboratory to find the spectacular scene of creation under way--and Frankenstein intoxicated with his own godlike power.FRANKENSTEIN is in many ways the original horror classic, virtually creating the genre itself, leading to numerous sequels and myriad imitators. Whale's ability to give humanity to the Monster is one of the film's most stunning successes.

  • FRANKENSTEIN 1931 EXCELLENT HORROR CLASSIC

I am writing my review because of another member's false review created on 09/11/08. This member's ID merlinever "review" comments follow my own: Here is what I say about the movie: FRANKENSTEIN is a wonderful, vintage 1931 classic motion picture. Very cutting edge for its time, and set the bar high for all monster movies to follow. Often imitated, never duplicated, it still stands up today as a major force in its genre. The first look at the Frankenstein Monster is shocking, especially to the relatively naive 1931 audiences, as the camera takes ever more closeup shots of his hideous face in rapid succession. Keep in mind that "talkies" had only been around for less than 5 years by then. The action is fast-paced. The storyline and dialogue is still magical and believable even today. ...

  • Monster Minus

Generally, this is the archtypical horror classic and a wonderful film. But I was disappointed to see that one of the most interesting parts, in which the escaped monster is taken in by a kind and overly generous old blind man, had been cut. In this part, as the monster dines with the old blind man, he makes the statement, "Eat,good......Drink, good.......People bad." And, of course, after the meal he repays the old blind man's generosity by killing him. I jusst can't imagine why they cut that part.

  • One of the great classics
