About this product

Product Information

Originally broadcast on HBO, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is a thought-provoking drama from British director David Yates (THE WAY WE LIVE NOW). Yates slices his narrative into two parts; the first involves a lengthy courtship between primary characters Lawrence (Bill Nighy) and Gina (Kelly MacDonald). Meeting by chance in a cafe, the two share a common bond, although Lawrence's natural reticence makes it hard for Gina to read him. The second half of the film sees the couple travelling to Reykjavik in Iceland, where high-ranking politician Lawrence is due to work at the G8 summit. But Gina has a few surprises in store for both Lawrence and the gathering of politicians, leading to an eye-opening second half of the movie. Beautifully shot, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is a politically-charged romance movie with remarkable performances from Nighy and MacDonald.

Easily one of the best sellers that I've ever encountered on eBay. Items came in truly Brand New shape and in their original shrink wrap (with the shiny HBO stickers as proof). Extremely quick to ship. Arrived fast. Superb price. But on top of all that, she made sure I got my BOGO freebie, even though she made me a Seller's Offer. So for a handful of dollars, I got TWO excellent HBO comedy DVD sets. 5++ STARS.

    Must see!

I absolutely LOVE this movie! I think it should be required viewing! It’s a quirky little British film with the wonderful Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald. As with so many British films, it’s subtle and understated; it’s also thought-provoking and heart-warming. Watch it… you’ll thank me! Note: I’ve had a run of bad luck lately with NEW dvds not working. Happy to say, this one worked just fine! 🙂

  • Romantic Comedy with a message

I saw this on it's televsion debut. And I have to say it was a wounderful story. Though it covers a serious topic, poverty and the G-8. I am sure that screenwriter Richard Curtis wrote this so that it would be released in time for everone to see it before the G-8 summit. And I hope they saw it. The G-8 summit was the weekend of 2 July 2005. The film is a Romantic Comedy staring Bill Nighy as Lawrence, a financial advisor working for the Chancellor of the Exchequer of the U.K. And co-stars Kelly Macdonald as Gina, the young woman Lawrence meets in the Cafe. This unlikely couple strikes up a relationship of sorts. And Lawrence invites Gina to accompany him to Iceland, where he is attending the G-8 summit. Gina shows a genuine interest in Lawerence's work and she starts to make comments ...

  • The Movie that makes you think

The movie starts out a little slow but as the story unfolds and we get know each of the charactors it becomes something very percious. I think it makes us all look in the mirror and see are selves for what we are and that is people will look the other way for are own self comfort. We can blame the politicians who have with in their own power to do the right thing on a world scale and don't do it However what about each one of us who see world hunger and look the other way because it is so uncomfortable. The story and the actors are so great in this movie one cannot help but have his or hers heart touched and it makes us all want to be apart of the generation that makes difference.

  • A chance encounter changes history.

This TV movie might be slow and boring to some, I found it engaging. It's the old story about an unpretentious working class girl with a troubled past speaking truth to power to compromised high ranking politicians. There's an element of a May-December romance when the young lady draws out her older man's true feelings then gives him the backbone to stand up to his superiors. All seems to be for naught when the young lady is sent packing and the newly emboldened public servant is discharged for his insolence. There is a happy ending when the vanquished are vindicated however we're left wondering if the budding romance can be salvaged.

  • Do you dare to speak out?

It is a story of romance evolves around the MDGs. It’s a bit unrealistic, but in my opinion very beautiful. I wish I could be as courageous as the girl in that movie. Not overbearing, but affirmative. She dares to speak out, to urge definition actions for children in the world. I don't think I am as strong as her. Most of the children die from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, poor nutrition, or diarrhea. I can’t imagine the pain of being a parent and looking at my own kid(s) die a slow and painful death—just because I do NOT even have 10 cents to save them. The point is: we can compromise, we can shake our heads and say “poor children,” then go back to our BBQ chicken dinner and Hollywood gossips—b/c we don’t have to see those people fighting for their lives face-to-face ...
