About this product

Product Information

Forty years ago, Buzz Aldrin became the second human, minutes after Neil Armstrong, to set foot on a celestial body other than the Earth. The event remains one of mankind's greatest achievements and was witnessed by the largest worldwide television audience in history. In the years since, millions more have had their Earth-centric perspective unalterably changed by the iconic photograph of Aldrin standing on the surface of the moon, the blackness of space behind him and his fellow explorer and the Eagle reflected in his visor. Describing the alien world he was walking upon, he uttered the words "magnificent desolation." And as the astronauts later sat in the Eagle, waiting to begin their journey back home, knowing that they were doomed unless every system and part on board worked flawlessly, it was Aldrin who responded to Mission Control's clearance to take off with the quip, "Roger. Understand. We're number one on the runway." The flight of Apollo 11 made Aldrin one of the most famous persons on our planet, yet few people know the rest of this true American hero's story. In Magnificent Desolation , Aldrin not only gives us a harrowing first-person account of the lunar landing that came within seconds of failure and the ultimate insider's view of life as one of the superstars of America's space program, he also opens up with remarkable candor about his more personal trialsand eventual triumphsback on Earth. From the glory of being part of the mission that fulfilled President Kennedy's challenge to reach the moon before the decade was out, Aldrin returned home to an Air Force career stripped of purpose or direction, other than as a public relations tool that NASA put to relentless use in a seemingly nonstop world tour. The twin demons of depression and alcoholism emergedthe first of which Aldrin confronted early and publicly, and the second of which he met with denial until it nearly killed him. He burned through two marriages, his Air Force career came to an inglorious end, and he found himself selling cars for a living when he wasn't drunkenly wrecking them. Redemption came when he finally embraced sobriety, gained the love of a woman, Lois, who would become the great joy of his life, and dedicated himself to being a tireless advocate for the future of space explorationnot only as a scientific endeavor but also as a thriving commercial enterprise. These days Buzz Aldrin is enjoying life with an enthusiasm that reminds us how far it is possible for a person to travel, literally and figuratively. As an adventure story, a searing memoir of self-destruction and self-renewal, and as a visionary rallying cry to once again set our course for Mars and beyond, Magnificent Desolation is the thoroughly human story of a genuine hero.

  • For the 'Faithful' and 'newbies'

Buzz has written several books, and this latest one brings us almost up-to-date in his storied life. If you have ever wondered about the mental make-up and trials and tribulations of an 'over-achiever', this is the book for you. Behind all the achievements and countless accolades, there is a man struggling with a flawed psyche that can't ever seem to find satisfaction, no matter what the achievement. From walking on the moon to the depths of drug dependence, he tells a brutally honest story of a man who carries-on and accomplishes almost in spite of himself. He has to be content with endless achievements because he can not allow himself to be happy with himself and within himself. His honesty has been too revealing for some readers. The newbies, (to Aldrin) may be shocked. The faithful ...

  • Should have been titled "DESOLATION DEPRESSION".

Before I bought the signed copy on eBay, I had borrowed the book from the public library. Being a moon and space enthusiast, I was hoping that Aldrin would tell us what it was like being on the moon, even if it was for the short time they were on the surface. Additionally, I thought that perhaps Aldrin would add details that he couldn't do while he was an astronaut or engaged by NASA to represent them. Details such as UFOs and aliens! I started to read the book in earnest but I soon found myself skipping sections because this book brings your head down as Aldrin tells us more about his mental and marital problems than about being on the moon. So, in reality, the book is mistitled. It should have been titled "DESOLATE DEPRESSION." I did not finish reading the book ...

  • Magnificent Desolation by Buzz Aldrin

Finally an astronaut is human. Not just the perfect hero that can do no wrong. If you ever heard the stories about Buzz Aldrin and wondered what made him tick, this is the book. I have a huge respect for Buzz after reading his book. Much of what I knew was from bad movies and stories. Simply put, he is a genius that battled depression and alcoholism. This book explains everything very candidly and in an interesting way. There's enough Apollo 11 story to be informative but mainly there to have a place to start. The rest is his personal hell he went thru until he met Lois in the late 80's and found the power of a positive influence can change your entire life even if you have depression. A must read if you have any curiosity about Buzz Aldrin and the real truth behind the prestige ...

  • Awesome Item!!

I am a huge, huge NASA fan, especially the old Mercury through Apollo missions. Buzz Aldrin's autobiography came in perfect mint condition with a clear crisp autograph. The price was more than reasonable especially compared to other similar items on the market. It also came with a certificate of authenticity verified by the Smithsonian that it was signed there during their recent Astronaut signing event celebrating the 40 year anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. This may be the best item I've ever found on ebay! I absolutely love it!

  • A very telling moon perspective.

A revealing perspective off astronaut's personalities - especially Aldrin's What do you do as an encore after walking on the moon. In person, Aldrin is a personable fellow. His book reveals a narcistic personality consumed by self importance.
