Apr s avoir r cup r sa fortune, David Balfour, recherch comme complice dans l'affaire du meurtre d'Appin, se rend aupr s de l'avocat g n ral, lord Prestongrange, muni d'une lettre de recommandation d'un lointain cousin, pour lui exposer l'affaire, et tenter de disculper James Stewart et Alan Breck. Prestongrange se prend de sympathie pour lui et croit son innocence, mais tente de le dissuader de t moigner, pour des raisons politiques. Devant son obstination, il laisse son adjoint, Simon Fraser, tenter de l'effrayer, sans plus de succ s. Lors de ses all es et venues chez l'avocat g n ral, il fait la connaissance d'une tr s jeune fille, Catriona Drummond, dont le p re, James More, est emprisonn pour trahison. Il en tombe amoureux; Catriona, de son c t , ne semble pas insensible au jeune homme. Mais David se m fie de son p re, qui semble pr t faire un faux t moignage contre James Stewart pour regagner sa libert . Alan Breck est toujours en fuite, et David Balfour cherche le revoir avant son d part pour la France, mais il est suivi par Neil, un des hommes de James More, ce qui renforce ses soup ons l' gard de ce dernier; il demande Catriona de retenir Neil, et parvient ainsi rejoindre Alan. Malgr les risques qu'il sait courir, il n'embarque pas avec son ami, mais se laisse capturer par des hommes, dont certains sont la solde du p re de Catriona, et qui le gardent prisonnier sur l' le de Bass, le temps que le proc s de James Stewart s'ach ve. Il arrive en effet trop tard, et l'accus est condamn mort.
