Reviews
Included in Q Magazine's "90 Best Albums Of The 1990s.", Ranked #30 in Mojo's "100 Modern Classics" -- "The results were rhapsodic: bowed saw symphonies and the ineffable 'Holes', a fantastical elegy to magic and loss.", "...their fourth effort feels like a watershed, the point where their heady mix of orchestral pop, roots rock, psychedlia, prog, choral, and chamber music finally crystallizes into something special and damn near ineffable..." - Rating: A-, Ranked #30 in Q's "Best 50 Albums of Q's Lifetime", Included in Wire's "50 Records Of The Year 1998", 8 (out of 10) - "...It's an album of shameless good-byes: to Manhattan, to love, and (most painfully) to not giving a shit. Successfully repressing his Sonic Youth tics, Donahue starts with goofy, SMILE-era Beach Boys and heaps on even thicker strata of strings and brass than SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE..."

  • an odd mixture

A strange clash of styles and sounds. The magnificent "Godess on a Hiway" is the outstanding track - I never tire of hearing it. "Holes" is a beautiful song and "Opus 40" is also fine. I bought the cd (for under £5) on the strength of knowing these 3 songs I was familiar with, but the other tracks in between are a disappointment. They are an odd mix- quite classical in parts with soaring strings etc - these bits are a bit over-the-top and bordering on pretentious. Others are clearly instrumental fillers, sometimes sounding no more inspirational than elevator music or a background soundtrack to a film. I bought it on the strength of the 3 songs I previously mentioned, and the cd was probably worth it for those alone, however they are all now included on the double cd retrospective "The ...

  • how does that ol' song go ?

Arrived hear via The Flaming Lips & now I don't wish to desert this box of delights for some time....maybe it's because i'm working retrospectively ,as many music lovers tend to do & following the theme of finding an artist~song~sound~look~hook that stimulates & I've found Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs has everything I could wish for...I must admit on the first time of playing the album I was dissapointed,I had just been playing The Lips Yoshimi & how do you follow that?...By playing this album over & over . It has certainly broadened my musical taste as Johnathan Donahue is gifted at finding a beautiful line, taking control & expanding it into something wonderful. Deserter's Songs takes you on a musical journey thro' folk pop softrock jazz blues classical to avant garde. If you are ...

  • essential listening for the indie muso.

An essential indie album of 1998. Although the sound and songs are immediately familiar, at the time of release was innovative. The album is uneven and goes off the boil quite seriously at times. The band also seem to rely almost exclusively on a theremin for their cat strangling in a violin atmospheric whine that punctuates all the tracks. Overall an essential component of an indie connoiseur's soundtrack.
