MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album by the American grunge band Nirvana. It features an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993, for the television series MTV Unplugged. The show was directed by Beth McCarthy and first aired on the cable television network MTV on December 16, 1993. As opposed to traditional practice on the television series, the band played a set list composed of mainly lesser-known material and cover versions of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, Lead Belly, and Meat Puppets, whose Cris and Curt Kirkwood joined Nirvana onstage. MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released following the death of Kurt Cobain. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and has become the group's most successful posthumous release, having been certified 5x platinum in the United States by 1997. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. The performance was released on DVD in 2007.

    Simply Amazing!

    This cd is, hands down, amazing. You can't help but fall in love with the band all over again. I've been a HUGE fan since the Bleach album, and it was nice to hear them in a different tone and doing some amazing covers. Where Did You Sleep Last Night, The Man Who Sold The World, I mean the whole album is a "must listen".

    Nirvana's Unplugged is a great musical journey

    A lot of people will go on and on about how Nirvana's Unplugged is so important because symbolically it was all about Kurt Cobain's upcoming suicide. I disagree. I think this recording is important because it shows Nirvana's versatility and range. Up until this point, no one but the hardcore fans knew Cobain could do anything but screech and scream and play great loud life changing songs. This album, though, shows that Nirvana was more than a grunge band, they were real innovators. Not only did Cobain play his own loud, punk songs in a new and more insightful way, but he managed to incorporate such different artists as David Bowie, Meat Puppets, and even an obscure (to most rock artists anyway) southern folk musician, Leadbelly. Not one Unplugged artist besides Kurt ...

    Great Nirvana Concert CD!

    I had owned this recording when I had a cassette player in my previous car. What a difference to listen to the CD in my current car! I love this concert and recommend it highly.

    Nirvana Unplugged in New York is Nirvana's Finest

    I can't rave enough about Nirvana's Unplugged in New York Album - in my opinion the finest Nirvana album assembled and one of the finest live shows ever recorded. Unplugged albums are, of course, acoustic (ie without the plugs) - and surprisingly it suits Nirvana's hard, alternative sound superbly. More importantly, Kurt Cobain is phenomenal and mellows out his voice just enough to make the Unplugged music sounds perfect. The crowd is into the performance and their energy is palpable.     Great CD

    Really love this CD. I'm more of an Alice in Chains fan,but recently got into Nirvana through a Facebook friend. I really love Nirvanas covers of songs on this CD,especially Meat Puppets songs like Plateau, Oh,Me,and Lake of Fire. I highly recommend this CD for any grunge music lover.
