    max out that old AMD-based system

    Athlon II X2 (regor) is the native dual-core K10/phenom-based CPU that was produced for socket AM2+ or AM3. It doesn't require dual-power-plane support which means that older socket AM2 boards are sometimes compatible as well. 3.6GHz is the highest speed grade that was released. If you can't run a Phenom II or want to keep your power consumption down then this is the clear alternative.
