Product Information

The year is 2006; America has released a nuclear bomb on Taiwan leaving only Australia in its wake. A small crew aboard a U.S. Navy submarine led by Commander Dwight Towers (Assante) manages to survive the devastating blast, but it isn't long before they're forced to place the vessel under the Australian government's command. They're assigned a life threatening task; to enter radioactive waters and find an insane scientist (Brown) who's been in solitude while waiting for what he believes to be the final "end." Before the mission begins, the commander meets the scientist's beautiful ex-fiancée (Ward), to whom he immediately takes a liking. A romantic liaison ensues, but the mission at hand threatens their love, and the lives of the entire crew. A remake of the 1959 classic based on the novel by Nevil Shute.

    Interesting take on a great book.

    Story was engaging. This is a remake from the 2000 timeframe. The original was produced in the early 1960s, so in the remake they brought certain aspects up to the era.

    GIVEN THE ACCLAIM THIS FILM RECEIVED, I WAS GREATLY DISAPPOINTED IN EVERY ASPECT OF ITS EXECUTION. SOME FILMS -- THIS BEING ONE OF THEM -- SHOULD NEVER ATTEMPT TO REMAKE (AND IMAGINE THEY COULD IMPROVE UPON) THEIR PREDECESSOR. NEVIL SHUTE'S HORRIFIC LITERARY MASTERPIECE, CONVERTED TO THE CINEMA ORIGINALLY AND STARRING GREGORY PECK, AVA GARDNER, FRED ASTAIRE AND ANTHONY PERKINS (AMONG OTHER NOTABLES), SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAD TO CONTEND WITH SUCH AMATEURISH REPLICATION. EVEN THE SCREENPLAY, MODIFIED AS IT WAS, FELL SO FAR SHORT OF THE ORIGINAL THAT THE MEDIOCRE ACTING WAS ALMOST INCONSEQUENTIAL TO THE TRAGEDY OF ITS INTERPRETATION.     All good except Hollywood ending

    Acting and quality are very good. I would rate it higher if the movie ended according to the book and previous film with Gregory Peck instead of a Hollywood and romantic pleaser. Disappointing.

    artistic concepts

    it was well written the blocking flowed well the cinematography was decent and the music score is well done but Jery has a great record i think it would have been better in Panavision but it is good.The acting was typical of the era it is a comfortable story that entertains does not lecture
