It is anchored in place through the center umbrella hole and the gas tank has a holder. It's a really thought out design! I had read reviews before I purchased and one concern was that the lava rock can explode. I googled why that might happen and the reason is if the lava rock gets wet, holds moisture inside the rock, when they heat up they can explode. I've got a covered patio so that shouldn't be an issue.
