About this product

Product Information

Two American soldiers fighting in World War II France both fall in love with the same woman, an innkeepers daughter. The question becomes who they'll destroy first, the enemy or each other?War and women are the two forces pulling on Captain Flagg and Sergeant Quirt. During the First World War, Flagg waits for Quirt to train his recruits. In the meantime, Flagg spends his days wooing Charmaine, an innkeeper's beautiful daughter. When Flagg leaves for Paris to re-enter the fighting, the still-at-home Quirt takes a liking to Charmaine. What follows is a romantic triangle set against the backdrop of war, as Flagg and Quirt keep trading places until each discovers whom the other has been courting.

  • War film with a "life in the Marine Corps" comedy thread. James Cagney steals the show!

A "classic" directed by the great John Ford (1952). This is really a character study about "Captain Flagg, USMC" superbly played by James Cagney. Flagg is a career Marine Officer, who cleverly deals with every barracks situation, including Generals, romances, local French politicians, arranging marriages, coping with drunken sprees, as well as heroically leading young Marines in World War I combat. This may have been the origin of the later, strictly comic television show about Marine life, "Gomer Pyle, USMC." Above all, the diminutive Cagney must compete with his career-long adversary, and physically gigantic 1st Sergeant Quirt, (Dan Dealey) for the love of a fickle French barmaid, Charmaine (Corinne Calvet). Secretly, neither Marine wants permanent romantic involvement (their hearts and lives belong to 'the Corps") and Charmaine can't choose between either leading man. Very entertaining!
