    Pius the scared

    the author, a practicing catholic, started out hoping rot explain and defend Pius 12. in the course of his research in the Vatican archives he uncovered much evidence— not that Pius was pro-hitler, but that he was too scared to do anything, however trifling, that would antagonize hitler and the nazis. the Vatican thought the nazis were preferable to the commies overrunning Europe. my few comments do not come near to the deep and detailed scholarship of mr. Cornwell. well written, not a dry history book.
