    Print Server performs

    The JetDirect has been around awhile and is a good way to connect a legacy HP printer (with a parallel port) to a home network using a RJ45 (ethernet) connection. There is no software to configure the JetDirect. Typically no configuration is required (manual available on HP web site). Instead it has an embedded web interface. This interface does not work with today's browsers without significant reconfiguring (the embedded java used is blocked due to security cobcerns). Access however is available using telnet, and is very simple. Please see the manual.

    Obsolete Firmware Necessitates Unavailable Java for Config, Can't Upgrade Firmware

    The JetDirect 500X has an adequate web+Java-based configuration system. With the particular firmware loaded on the unit I received, this was only accessible using Java 7 which is no longer available from Oracle (Sun) or authorized sources. Later Java versions refuse to run the tool, complaining of security problems. Updating my unit to a current firmware was not possible using either the version of HP "Download Manager" utility available from HP or obsolete version available elsewhere. Do some research before you buy. If the seller doesn't specify a current firmware version, expect a hassle with Java.
