12 x 5 was the Rolling Stones' second album release in the U.S. and featured the "Animal Five" in their original incarnation as a pure blues band. The tracks are mostly covers performed in the Stones' distinctive, gritty style, with little studio enhancement. Standout tracks include the blues classics "Confessin' the Blues" and "Grown Up Wrong", as well as their hit cover of the ballad "Time Is On My Side." The guitar work on Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" and particularly Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now", features the amazing "weaving" style--with Keith Richards and the late, great Brian Jones trading lead and rhythm roles throughout the number. This disc is truly early Stones magic.
While there are some wonderful tracks on this sophomore release, it suffers from some weak moments when compared to their stellar debut. Still a wonderful slice of the primal 1964 bad boys. Worth it. Enjoy, I did.
