I'm using this lens on a micro Four Thirds camera (E-PL2). Here is my experience to date: Focusing - fast and quiet to focus. Stops - Changing the aperture is a easy, smooth and positive Zoom - The zoom mechanism is fast, smooth and silent Image quality - Good contrast, excellent color, when wide open has pleasant off-focus background, off-focus foreground is less pleasant but still fully acceptable, it is by no means ugly or unusual looking. It has good resolution with individual hairs of the fur of a squirrel well defined when in the 150mm zoom position. I am using a Lumix Four Thirds to micro Four Thirds adapter that allows for full use of the automated features of the lens (auto-focus, auto stop down). This lens works as you would expect a lens from a major manufacturer to work. It is a good, solid tool that serves well from the ~normal to medium telephoto range. Unless you need more speed than f/3.5 - f/4.5 this ought to take good care of you within the range.Read full review
Hi Olympus users. After thinking of setting my OM-2's back and going digital, I finally purchased my E-510 about a year ago. The camera is great but the 14/42 lense was alittle lacking, so more power. So, to ebay to buy my 14/54 lense of which I am still amazed with. It is a great, quality lense but I have been also watching the Zuiko 40/150 lenses also, comparing the series one and two. About a month ago while watching several lenses on ebay, I put a bid in on a series one lense, just for fun, and won the bid.......... A week later it was on my camera. Taking photos of our dogs and at our town's veteran's park, I found the lense to be very sharp and maybe alittle brighter that the camera's original lense. The series one 40/150 is slightly larger than the newer, more compact lense but the 3.5 appeture over the 4.5 of the series two lense means alot to me. I'm no pro talking up lenses and cameras, especially digital, but this lense is another quality piece from Olympus. The 40/150 series one compares equally to a couple of my film lenses. It is slightly larger than the series two but I am used to having something in my hand when holding my cameras and the size more balances out the camera. Although I do still like my OM series cameras, the time for change has come and with the purchase of my Zuiko 40/150 lense I find myself grabbing my E-510 and running out taking photos around town with all my photos comming out just great. I rated this lense at being good. It really is an excellent lense but if I rate it excellent there is no room for improvement. I did my home-work and watched for the right lense, and right price and am very happy with my lense.Read full review
I'm using this four-thirds lens on a micro four thirds camera (the Olympus E-P1) using a chinese JY-43F adapter. The lens generally works well for me. Picture quality is good but unremarkable. Pictures are neither so awesome that I dance, nor so bad that I weep. However, compared to the Panasonic Lumix H-FS014042 14-42mm (which I also have) in M4/3, the auto-focus on this one is slow and uncertain. With this Zuiko 40-150mm, the auto-focus tends to overshoot and then "seek" back and forth. The Lumix 14-42mm focuses quickly and reliably. This auto-focus wonkiness is not enough of a problem for me to leave the lens out of my bag, and at home altogether. But it's enough of a problem to make me think twice about when to use it. Maybe on an four thirds camera, this would not be a problem. Or maybe if I used the official Pana or Oly adapter, instead of the chinese knockoff, this wouldn't be a problem. But I suspect it's the lens itself. Mostly I use old manual focus (Canon FD, Nikon F, Konica AR) lenses on the E-P1, and it's actually faster to focus manually with some of these than with this particular lens. Let's be clear. I paid less about $80 US for my instance, and a new lens in this range three times the price on either amazon or ebay. So at the price, some compromise is to be expected.Read full review
I purchased the lens because I desired a longer telephoto that I can use for general walkaround/street/portraiture/event photography. I am happy with my purchase. She is a beautifully built, robust lens. I am using it with my Olympus E-Volt 410. It dwarfs the small camera body, but I like the look of it; reminiscent of 1970's 35mm SLRs. It is a relatively fast (for the price) lens, which is sharp and has good colour rendition. I love the fact that it has a steel mount, which was missing on the kit lens, giving a nice tactile feedback when installing it onto my camera. It feels as though it is built to last; I hope this lens will be in my collection for tens of thousands of pictures to come. Cheers, Bob
Olympus has always been very good with optics and this one is no exception. This lens is a great trade off of performance & price. Where as there are better zoom lenses available with bigger zoom and faster lenses (e.g. f/2.8), they also tend to cost 5-10x the price of this lens & are much bulkier and heavier. And while those premium lenses will perform better, you can bet their performance isn't the same 5-10x better to match the premium price. The 40-150mm is a very compact lens as well, so will easily fit in your photo gadget bag. Because of this, some people I know with better lenses (e.g. the 50-200mm f/2.8 at about $900) still carry this one when they are going to be out all day and want to travel light. Even a premium lens isn't very good if you often do not want to lug it around. The 40-150mm is very portable so you will always have it ready to go since it travels light.Read full review
I purchased this lens as I like a larger size lens for the big hands I have. I would have given this lens a 4 because of the new smaller equivalent lens Olympus makes now. But that is exactly why I bought it. Those that are more savvy than I about the differences in new Vs old are quick to say the pictures you get with the newer lens is better, but I can not see any difference in the quality of the photos. You have to go down to the single pixel to find any difference and the human eye can't do that. Your printing of the photos has more to do with the quality than any lens difference can make. If you check it out you will see this older lens is faster and so will give you a better shot in lower light conditions. That is a BIG plus when you are in less than perfect conditions as it is in natural settings. Another feature I looked at is the metal mount instead of the newer plastic mount. I like the metal. I had a plastic mount break before from a small sideways bump to the end of the lens. It ruined my outing because I didn't have a backup with me. I have since replaced the broken plastic mount on my smalln newer lens with an older metal mount taken from a broken 14-42mm that was sold for parts. (Yep... you can do that) As to value, I have to say this lens is worth every cent you have to pay. I think you will find that once you start looking you'l see the older lenses are not really cheaper than the new ones. Perhaps others know what I know. Smaller size is not always better and a faster speed is always desirable. I found the photo quality is outstanding and now i take this lens out before my higher priced equiv. lenses. I think you will be as happy with any decision you make on purchasing ether the older lens or getting the new smaller style. Oly has it together no matter which you choose. Now... Take your camera and go have funRead full review
Having recently purchased an Olympus E-500 camera body, I wanted to get an Olympus digital lens. I am very glad I did. The photographs were extremely clear, without apparent distortion. I enlarged the images to 400%, and the details were clear whether in the center or corners of the image. The auto focus system worked quickly and flawlessly with the camera, in AUTO, SCENE, and SPORT modes. It did not matter whether I was taking a stationary, planned shot or a series of rapid shots to cover a group in motion. The telephoto function worked flawlessly as well, with the above observations holding true at all settings from 40 to 150 mm. The performance of this lens, with the E-500 camera, enabled me to concentrate on the subjects of my photographs, rather than the mechanics of setting up any given shot. While not a professional photographer, I have been using SLR cameras for three decades, and consider myself to be a serious and practiced photographer. I would recommend this lens very highly to anyone moving up from amateur. It is well worth the price, and there are good bargains on eBay. (I got mine unused as a "factory sample" for $100 + shipping). It should be noted that this lens has a four-thirds mount, and will not be compatible with all Digital SLR cameras. Some of the four-thirds adapters do not allow use of the automatic focus feature of this lens. Please do your research.Read full review
I just recently purchased my first Olympus DSLR camera. It came with a standard 14-42mm lens which was ok for short distance photo taking. I purchased a 40-150mm Zuiko lens to see how much of a difference it would make. First off, this lens is faster to auto-focus than the 14-42mm lens. The zoom is much better than I had expected and photo quality is great. Also note that the 40-150mm is slightly (very slightly) bigger than the 14-42mm lens that came with my E-420. Its hard to beleive that you get such a great zoom with such a small lens. The camera stays well balanced in hand and with full zoom the lens is only extended to around 8 or so inches. If you are looking for a good zoom with high quality photo in a compact size for your Olympus camera, look no further! With a 2x mulitplier you can get 80-300 out of this lens and photo quality is excelent.Read full review
I really enjoy using this lens and it is now the one I usually go to for most everything. The images are sharp and clear, and it is the most versatile lens I've used. The only thing that I'd like better would be a longer (wider range) focal length. Overall, it's a very good, very affordable lens.

This is an excellent lens for my use. It compliments the 14-42 lens that I have. When I got it I immediately took it outside to photograph flowers and plants on our deck and front entrance. The combination of the keen focus capabilities in auto focus and the 10 megapixel capabilities of the camera makes photography an enjoyable hobby for someone like me that has always had a problem being able to focus accurately. The colors were vibrant even this late in the season. The bell pepper red just popped. If you are still hesitant to purchase one of these lenses, I suggest to rent one and see for yourself.
