About this product

Product Information

Adopting the same action-heavy formula popularized in Koei's Dynasty Warriors series, Mystic Heroes features characters and a storyline originally inspired from the Japanese anime Houshin Engi. Four characters (Shiga, Lani, Tai, and Naja) are initially available for selection, each possessing a unique elemental affinity (wind, ice, thunder, and fire) as well as ratings in attack, magic, and speed. Story mode finds players embarking on a quest spanning eight wide-open environments, each consisting of multiple levels.

As in the Dynasty Warriors series, the game offers a third-person viewpoint and hordes of enemy forces to conquer -- which now include an assortment of soldiers, undead creatures, monsters, sorcerers, and wild beasts. After carving their way through the masses, players will battle large sub-boss and boss creatures. Blessed with a variety of devastating maneuvers, players are capable of unleashing melee attacks, combinations, and an eclectic selection of magical spells. Magic is categorized into four main types: Direct, Target, Sword, and Jump.

Direct Magic encompasses projectile and area spells, while Target Magic lets players cast spells from a first-person viewpoint. Sword Magic imbues weapons with elemental power, and Jump Magic hails destruction upon the hapless enemies below. Defensive techniques, such as blocking and rolling, can also be implemented during battle. Onscreen indicators reveal the number of consecutive hits and KOs achieved, health and MP reserves, along with a basic representation of the number of allies and enemies on the battlefield.

To help players overcome the overwhelming odds, 70 different runes can be acquired during the adventure to give characters added abilities and spells. The game also features multiplayer support for up to four competitors on a split-screen. Five modes of play offer both cooperative and deathmatch styles of combat on one of ten selectable maps. As a bonus, single players are free to challenge computer-controlled characters in the multiplayer contests if no one else is available.

  • Okay for non-gamers, but don't expect too much from it.

I originally wanted to buy this game because I had a huge nostalgic yearning for it. My childhood friends played it with me when I was 12, and I loved it back then. The character designs were unique, the fighting style was cool, and the multi-player feature was the most engaging of all the games we played together. Even years after moving, I always looked back on the game with fond memories. It wasn't until I was a freshman in college that I purchased the game. I was hoping for a good multi-player game to play with my college buddies, since we didn't have many teamwork-based multi-player games (Super Smash Bros. got boring after a while, sad to say). It was disappointing at first, due to my memories holding a childish, idealized version of the actual game. We started with multi-player, ...

  • Mystic Heroes

One of the best games out there for the older kid crowd. It still is a fighting game with the required elimination of bad guys by magic, sword and mean strength, but there is virtually no 'gore'. When the bad guys are defeated, they simply blink and then fade away. Perfect for my 10 to 12 year old kids, who want the challenge of the more mature games - but I don't have to worry about the blood and gore of the more realistic games. I truly wish there were more games built with this in mind, because quite frankly... I can do without all the blood myself. It's a great game at a great price and still works on the Wii. Give it a try!

  • Good Game to Relive.

I decided to re-buy Mystic Heroes because it was an engaging game that up to four people can play without being too involved or used to fighting games like this. It is a reasonably long game if you choose to play through with all the characters. As far as the interest-level that this game holds, I feel you can play it for 1 to 2 hours at once without getting bored, then come back and play again after a few days.

  • Mystic Heroes

I like this game it has very good graphics for an older game console, there's 4 characters to choose from and you're pretty much attacking anything that comes your way. There's always enemies around, but like any game it's enough to be able to handle. I could do pretty good damage to enemies after restoring my health, and when you defeat so much you do get good health. I had lots of fun playing this game and rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

  • Great throwback

This game is a mix of Dynasty warriors with its own twist though. I enjoy the story, the magic, and the four player co-op option. If you are into a beat em up type of game play, with some friends or family, this game is as good as they get on GameCube.
