The vintage 1990 Gargoyle's Quest video game for the Nintendo Game Boy is a spin-off of the popular Ghosts 'N Goblins franchise. It puts players in the role of Red Devil, the enemy gargoyle from the original game in the series. Those who played the original will find the running, jumping, projectile-emitting, creature-killing action very similar. However, this version adds a number of roleplaying elements to the formula including leveling up, conversing with townspeople, and collecting mystical items. The main character also has some abilities that previous characters lacked, including flying and climbing. The graphics of this game are clean and detailed. As well as side-scrolling, there are also some overhead-view scenes to mix things up.

A Fantastic, Under-rated Action-RPG!
About the Game: In Gargoyle's Quest for Game Boy, you are Firebrand, that pesky little gargoyle from the "Ghost's 'N Goblins" series. Only this time it's the rest of the undead world that threatens to thwart your progress. Though it's no walk in the park, this spin-off is a bit lighter in difficulty than it's spiritual prequel. When moving between areas the view is an overhead RPG style, that switches to side scrolling platformer when the action starts. Other elements, like the ability to increase your stamina & firepower, further blur the line between the two genres. It's a unique style and works very well here. Graphics: Graphics are great, especially for an early Game Boy release. Sprites are nicely sized, shading is well-done and everything has a sort of cartoony "Beetlejuice" ... It controls more fluidly than Ghosts 'N Goblins on the NES, making it more satisfying to play through. The difficulty is just about right for my tastes. Some stages took a few tries, but I didn't feel like it threw any cheap kills or impossibly difficult passages at me. You can jump, hover/fly and cling to vertical walls providing a great range & interesting movement throughout levels. Just watching it is fun! Level design was excellent, with interesting variations that held my attention to the final credits. The password system is robust enough to let you "save" your items & (up to 9) lives. Pro(+)/Con(-) Breakdown: + Excellent Graphics & Sound + Great fun to play + Plenty of power upgrades keep you interested in progressing - Replay value is alright, but could be better (a "2nd quest" like the early Zelda series would have been great). Bottom Line: This is an excellent game that no original Game Boy fan should be without!

This game IS graphically poor by today's standards (it is 20 years old, after all) but in my view, game play is what really matters. This is another example of making the rudimentary level of technology available play well, and be one of the prettier classic Game Boy titles. That's pretty imperssive, when you don't even have COLOR to work with, let alone the wide array of software making today's games. Yes,the visuals are simple, but the details make this one stand out. This game was ahead of its time when it released, too. Not EVERY game released back then had RPG elements mixed with the solid platforming the classic Capcom games are known and loved for. But it's all here, in the Capcom style: great level design, catchy music, and a new character starting his own series as a spin-off. If ... Many people are framiliar with the ghosts and goblins franchise but not as many know about the Gargoyles Quest side series. I saw the japanese version of this game at a flea market, but because they didnt have the english version i couldnt buy it, so i went to Ebay and found it for a third of the price. You play as the red demon you usually fight in GnG, the game is a lot of fun and the music is done well for an old gameboy game.
