John Ford distills a quartet of plays from the early career of Eugene O'Neill--BOUND EAST FOR CARDIFF, THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, THE ZONE, and THE MOON OF THE CARIBEES--into a stark, fatalistic group portrait of lonely seafaring men. During World War II, the crew of the tramp steamer Glencairn enjoys a final night of carousing in the West Indies before shipping out to pick up a load of dynamite in Baltimore. Among them are the young, good-natured Ole Olsen (John Wayne), saving his pay to buy a small farm in his native Sweden; paternal Irishman Driscoll (Thomas Mitchell); and tortured English aristocrat Smitty (Ian Hunter). After stowing the explosives in Baltimore, the crew is on edge, fearful that rough seas might detonate their volatile cargo. They're also concerned about the increasingly isolated Smitty, who they believe may be signaling the Nazis. The favorite film of the playwright O'Neill, who ran it repeatedly, and certainly among the director's best, THE LONG VOYAGE HOME was made under a deal with 20th Century Fox that allowed Ford to make one nonstudio film per year. While both Ford and the ensemble cast turn in magnificent work, the most notable contribution to the film is made by legendary cinematographer Gregg Toland, who asked the director if he could experiment with a new type of deep-focus photography. Ford agreed, and the film's astounding low-key, high-contrast, deep-focus compositions--which Toland would next use in CITIZEN KANE--make this film a companion to Orson Welles's masterpiece as one of the most sublimely photographed in the medium's history.

A scary view of life on the open seas and the poor desperate men that lived on that ship!
All of the characters in this movie are poor lonely men on a ship that went through hellish storms frequently while out on the open seas. Once in a while they would stop ashore for a short while and get drunk and have some fun, but after that it was back to the same monotonous life. The only thing that kept them from going crazy was the comradery with their rough hewn buddies. The performances of John Wayne and the other actors is very good and compelling. This movie is a bit of a downer, but after all, it is about a sad minotanous existence where danger is never far away. Director John Ford took four of Eugene O'Neill's one-act plays about the sea, and created this classic 1940 film about seamen and their lives, changing the setting from the turn of the century to WWII. This was O'Neill's favorite film based on his plays, and he actually watched it often enough to eventually wear out his film print. This is also one of the few films in which Duke played a non-American, creating an impressive Swedish accent! This is not your standard John Wayne film. This is one of the few roles Duke played in which he is not the strong hero, doing what's right against the odds. In Wayne's character Ole Olsen, we see a young Swedish farmer, vulnerable, naive and easily taken-advantage of. He does an impressive and convincing job in the skin of Ole, and it is a joy to ... This movie is not easy to find on DVD. It was so great to find it and purchase it on eBay. It is a great movie that includes many great and famous actors. For me, it's been well worth owning and watching Thanks for offering it , eBay.
