The Human Stain
First, I would like to write that this is an excellent book, thoughtful, provocative, insightful and may go down as a contemporary classic. However, the editing is sloppy and I wish to highlight 3 factual errors that need to be revised by Philip Roth in the next edition. First, he writes as introduction to the character of the Arthur Sussman character that he served in the second Ford administration. There was no second Ford Administration as it was snatched away from him by the indomitable and flawed Jimmy Carter. Second, he writes when introducing the organic farm that the owners forewent the usual metal branding of cows`ears and gave them name tags. The branding of the ears is mandated by state law and is proof of TB inoculation by a state certified veterinarian. Failure to have the ... Third he writes the snake ate 7 mice in a day. Roth needs to read Steinbecks short story ¨The Snake¨on the truth of that matter. Any snake that ate 7 mice in one day would split its guts. I hope that these comments reach Mr. Roth. Unfortunately, this site does not provide for a readier access to the author or the editorial department at Vintage International. By the way the books ISBN number is 0-375-72634-9. Perhaps if Roth had his own website, I could direct my comments directly to him.
