Buying this will severely compromise your productivity...in a good way
I remember opening up this bad boy on my 11th birthday and how it made everything - including the Janet Jackson CD which was the "cool" gift of the afternoon - pale in comparison. This series not only includes KQ1-7, but also includes the VGA version of KQ1, both Laura Bow games, and a few other of Roberta Williams' old gems. 13 years later, I am re-living and re-loving this series which gave me hours of fun, frustration (before I discovered walkthroughs, ha), and fear. I'm not kidding about the last one, either; the Boogeyman from KQ7 and the Laura Bow games still freak. me. out. omg. Anyway, this collection isn't for everyone- the first three games are 8-bit and the best graphics you'll see in this collection is in KQ7 which plays like a Disney movie. So if you're into ~~kEwL~~ ... So if you're into ~~kEwL~~ graphics, you probably don't want this. But! What it lacks in fancy eye candy, it more than makes up for in the puzzles and the plot. Each King's Quest game (at least, until 8, but never mind that because now fans have made "The Silver Lining") bleeds into the next and references past installments, thereby creating an epic story arc concerning the royal family of Daventry. You'll find lots of fairy and folk tale references peppered throughout this series along with a couple contemporary easter eggs (think Batmobile). Be warned that the first four games are also text-and-graphics, meaning that you have to type commands in for the character to do your bidding. (Laura Bow 1 is also text-based.) This might be tedious for some, but if you're kind of a deviant like I am, you'll have great fun typing in bizarro commands just to see your characters squirm/reading the often hilarious commentary that comes after. Anyway, chances are, if you're buying this game, you probably don't need a review to tell you how effing awesome this collection is. So go forth! Grab that adventurer's cap and journey onwards!!
